With speculation rampant that Kevin Harvick would not continue driving the No. 29 Richard Childress Racing car through the remainder of his NASCAR Sprint Cup contract, the organization released a statement from Harvick and team owner Richard Childress indicating he will return next year.

Harvick sits 24th in the driver standings this season. Last month, he would neither confirm nor deny reports he has asked out of his contract, which runs through next season. Sponsor Shell’s contract with RCR also runs out next season.

“While the 2009 season has not been what any of us have wanted, Richard and I are both committed to improving the performance of the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil team for the remainder of this year and the 2010 season,” Harvick said in the statement.

Childress said Harvick would be the driver.

“Rumors about Kevin not driving for RCR next season have been flying around the garage area and in the media,” Childress said. “We want to put the rumors behind us by stating together that Kevin will drive RCR’s No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet Impala SS for the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.

“RCR continues to work on the overall performance of the No. 29 team, like we are with all of our teams, and the plan is to end the season on a high note. Kevin and the No. 29 team are also preparing for next season with the goal of making a run at the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship.”

Harvick has 11 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victories since he took over the driver duties of RCR’s No. 29 team in the second race of the 2001 season. He has finished in the top 10 in points in five of his eight seasons, has made the Chase in each of the last three years and won both the Daytona 500 and the Sprint All-Star Race in 2007.
