Reutimann to return to Michael Waltrip Racing in '09, hoping for better results

BROOKLYN, Mich.David Reutimann has had his option picked up by Michael Waltrip Racing for next season, and now he’s looking for the team to continue its progress.

The 38-year-old Reutimann has driven in Cup for the last two years at MWR. Sponsorship is expected to be announced next week at Bristol Motor Speedway, where MWR has a news conference scheduled.

“It gives you one less thing to worry about,” Reutimann said Friday at Michigan International Speedway. “Now you can concentrate on finishing out the year.”

Reutimann is 27th in the driver standings.

“We just need to continue to build  – this is a deal that is still a work in progress,” Reutimann said. “We’ll keep thrashing on things and doing things at the shop that we need to do.

“This is one of our newest cars [here]. It’s a lot lighter. That’s a step in the right direction rather than just trying to get to the race track every week just starting to build stuff and refine it and make it better. If we can continue to do that during the remainder of the year and pick back up a little bit, [and start] getting more consistent and finish out on a high note, we can roll into Daytona locked in [the top 35 in owners points] and go from there.”

Finishing 39th in driver points despite missing 10 races last year, Reutimann said his team has top-15 potential.

“I definitely think we have the potential,” Reutimann said. “We’re on the verge of being able to do that now. We just have got to get more consistent.”

Reuty is exactly correct when he states they need to become more consistent. One has to wonder when MWR will step up to the plate and make that progression forward.
