David Reutimann is preparing to race at two tracks in two states in two series this weekend, but you better believe which one has the priority.
Reutimann drives full time for Michael Waltrip Racing in both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide series, and he’ll race at Pocono Raceway in Cup and at Nashville Superspeedway in the Nationwide Series this weekend.
But the focus, clearly, is on Sprint Cup, Reutimann said.
“If anything, I think [Cup] takes away from the Nationwide effort a little but it doesn’t affect our Cup program at all,” Reutimann said of doing double-duty. “On the Nationwide side, you may miss a drivers meeting or practice, and it puts you behind a little bit. I know with the team that I have we will have a car that is prepared when I get to the track, and we’ll be ready to go.
“It doesn’t affect our Cup program at all. If it did, we wouldn’t be doing it. It’s as simple as that. Everyone at MWR works together to set up the schedule so that we maximize our time with each team and so we don’t lose anything at all on the Cup side. That’s the only way this is possible.”
Kyle Busch is also racing in the Cup and Nationwide series this weekend, but he’s also added the Craftsman Truck Series race in Texas to his schedule. That makes for a grueling affair, but Reutimann understands why Busch is doing it.
“A lot of people wonder why, with as well as he is running on the Cup side, he would jeopardize that success by spreading himself around and try to run all three series in one weekend,” Reutimann said. “As a driver, I understand why he would want to, and that’s because we love racing. If he thought that he was taking anything away from his Cup program he wouldn’t be doing this, but he has confidence that those three teams will be prepared when he arrives at each track.
“It’s the same thing with our No. 99 and No. 44 teams. Everyone at MWR just works together to be prepared for these weekends.”
