David Reutimann ran well in practice and qualifying for the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, but an engine failure left him with a 41st-place finish and without a place in the top 35 in the Sprint Cup owner points.

Reutimann’s No. 44 Michael Waltrip Racing team had fallen out of the top 35 after the Martinsville race, and the driver had hoped a good showing at Texas would get them back in – and guarantee a starting spot in this weekend’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.

“Texas was extremely disappointing,” Reutimann said. “Again, this team showed how good they are with our performance in practice and qualifying, so to walk away with another DNF and fall farther outside the top 35 is extremely frustrating.”

Reutimann’s team is 38th in owner points but only 38 points behind the 35th-place team of Regan Smith. Reutimann will have to make the Phoenix race via qualifying.

“It seems we can’t buy a break right now,” Reutimann said. “We were on track to have a finish that looked like it would’ve put us in the top 35 and then the engine let go and we finished 41st.

“The pressure is on again for us to qualify. The farther we fall behind those top-35 guys, the stronger of a finish we need to get back inside so we’d definitely like to make up some ground up this weekend.”
