Raines, Marlin and Logano would go home if Cup qualifying rained out

RICHMOND, Va. – Three part-time NASCAR Sprint Cup teams need to hope that the rain that is expected to hit Richmond International Raceway stays away until after qualifying is completed today.

Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 6:05 p.m. EDT on the .75-mile track. If qualifying is not completed, NASCAR would set the field mostly by points.

Because the part-time teams of Tony Raines (Front Row Motorsports), Sterling Marlin (Phoenix Racing) and Joey Logano (Joe Gibbs Racing) have not attempted to make every race, they would end up missing the field because the rules give preference to teams outside the top 35 that have attempted to qualify for every race.

There is a 50 percent chance of rain late this afternoon and then a 90 percent chance of rain in the evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Would have thought JGR might have put Logano in the 20 and Stewart in the 02 so they both could run, but maybe they didn't want to take a chance on Stewart dropping out early and possibly miss the Chase. Shame since Logano was 9th in practice.
