FORT WORTH, Texas – NASCAR has confiscated radiator belly pans from the cars of JTG Daugherty Racing’s Marcos Ambrose and Germain Racing’s Max Papis that violated its rule on where weight can be added in the car.

The pieces, confiscated in opening-day inspection, could result in penalties. Any penalties would be announced next week, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said.

The long steel pieces – 25.7 pounds for the Ambrose piece and 45.2 pounds for the Papis piece – also were installed in an unapproved mounting location, according to the tags on the parts which were on display in the NASCAR hauler.

"We'll know a lot more how NASCAR views these pans [next week]," said Michael Waltrip Racing Executive Vice President Cal Wells, whose organization builds the cars for Ambrose and Papis. "We'll have to wait and see. NASCAR likes to have parts submitted if you have got something new or different.

"I believe there was some confusion on what should or shouldn't be submitted. … In this particular case what we designed was a modular piece that holds a radiator, the pan up front and the duct work and a host of different things. There's no intent to do anything [around the rules]. We'll see what they decide to do."
