RICHMOND, Va. – Phoenix Racing plans to field a car for Brad Keselowski in the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race in two weeks, crew chief Marc Reno said Saturday at Richmond International Raceway.
Keselowski became eligible for the main event when he won the Aaron’s 499 last week at Talladega Superspeedway. Although he won in a Phoenix Racing car, Keselowski indicated Friday that he wasn’t sure who would enter a car for him in the all-star event.
But Hendrick Motorsports Vice President Doug Duchardt said Saturday that Hendrick would not field a fifth car in the event for Keselowski. NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said that the team could have a fifth car since it was a non-points event and it would not count against Keselowski’s seven races for the team as a development driver.
Phoenix Racing had hoped to buy a car from Hendrick Motorsports for the race, but the re-certification process would take too long, Reno said. Instead, Phoenix will use the car that it had planned to use for Keselowski at Richmond. Keselowski’s Nationwide team wanted him to concentrate on that series because it was a one-day show Friday, so Mike Bliss competed in the Cup event Saturday.
Anytime a car is certified by one team and then loaned to or bought by another team, it must be re-certified at NASCAR’s research and development center in Concord, N.C., and meeting those stringent specifications to be certified makes it difficult to turn around a car quickly, Reno said. That prevented Phoenix from getting a car from Hendrick.
“We’re going to send the car up to [Hendrick] on Tuesday and they’re going to look it over and help us make sure it’s right,” Reno said. “That’s about the best we can do. If they didn’t have this certification thing going on, we could have gotten a car, ran it and gave it back to them, but you can’t do that anymore [quickly].
“They’re going to run Darlington and Dover with Brad, so they need the car back.”
Reno said the team does not plan to participate in the crew competition.

May 3, 2009 at 2:03 AMGoing off the way the All-Star race works, it's my understanding that if Hendrick put Brad in the #25 car, Phoenix Racing would still be allowed to enter the #09 car, directly into the All-Star race. If this is the way it works, I don't get why that would not be what they decide to do. It would just make sense that it would benefit Hendrick the most. He'll have a 5th team running under his banner, and still have the #09 team running his equipment. It's a perfect (and pretty cheap) way to get some info for the Coke 600, I think.

May 4, 2009 at 1:50 PMTodd, what chip are you referring to? I think Brad has shown a remarkable sense of maturity in each and every interview that he has given of late. The way he drives and interviews after racing certainly shows that he is far more mature than most others at his level. (One "for instance" that comes to mind - Kyle Busch.) Every time Kyle has a bad race, or a bad day, you can hardly get anything out of him at all. He is either so rude or short with the interviewer, that it's not funny. Brad is the same Brad each and every interview that I have ever heard him give.
Report as AbuseBrad Keselowski is truly one of the brightest shining "stars" of the future of NASCAR, and knows how to drive a car.
Brad Keselowski is also doing so much more than Joey Logano right now in inferior or lesser equipment. Can you imagine what Brad could do if he had access to the same identical equipment that Joey has at his disposal, at this point in his career? Watch for him to do good things in the future!
(Mr. Hendrick will surely be making a huge mistake if he doesn't somehow sign Brad to a muti-year contract somehow..... He shouldn't let this kid slip through his fingers!)

May 4, 2009 at 8:35 PMRPM should do the same thing with Chase Miller, putting him in the almost forgotten #10 car as a rookie, Miller is almost forgotten as well. Don't know much about him, but I like his style of driving. Seen him on TV a few times. Go Brad and Chase! What is the deal with Marc Davis and Joe Gibbs Racing?

May 4, 2009 at 10:02 PMstill4da88 you're correct, the All star race is about the driver and only the driver not the car or owner or anything else. You can not sub one driver for another in the AllStar race. This is why Hendricks could put Keslowski in the car because it is not about whose car he won in, Phoenix racing could not go put another random driver in their car. Phoenix racing did not earn their car a spot in the All Star race, no owner can do that...Keslowski is the one who earned the spot. He could drive for anyone.
Report as AbuseChase Miller couldn't go in the 10 for the Allstar race for the same reason, he as a driver does not qualify for the race. As far as the regular season goes, RPM can barely afford 4 cars (that is why they tried to get rid of Sadler and are now so desperate for sponsorship for AJ's entire season) so they certainly can't afford to run a 5th car with a rookie. Teams have the rights to several different car #'s, it isn't just the 10 that isn't being used...for example JGR has the 02 car not being used.

May 4, 2009 at 10:22 PMI'm trying to find the official entry rules for the race because I started doing some searching and a few of them make it sound like Phoenix racing could put a random driver in there(speedtv.com) but other information(Nascar.com articles) says it is just about the drivers. Now I am totally confused. There wouldn't be much point to a fan vote if owners had rights. If someone finds the "official" detailed entrance rules somewhere please post them.

May 4, 2009 at 10:35 PMOk so I figured it out(except criteria 5, not sure if they are referring to have won the AllStar race before because it isn't just won any cup race because then more than half the drivers in the showdown/fan vote would be in the race and not those two things?)
Report as Abuse"Eligibility rules for Sprint Cup All-Star Race XXIV:
1st criteria: Drivers and car owners who have won races in the current and preceding year. If a driver leaves a team with which he has won a race, he remains eligible and the car owner's new driver also is eligible(through the last race before The All-Star Race)
2nd criteria: Drivers who are past Cup champions in the last 10 years
3rd criteria: Drivers who have won The All-Star Race in the past 10 years
4th criteria: The winning driver of the Sprint Open
5th criteria: Drivers who have won in previous years, not eligible by the above (not owners, just drivers)"
So the 09 being able to enter another driver than Keslowski is debatable..he is driving again for them this season so he is still part of the 09 team. I'd be curious to see how Nascar would handle that. A car such as the #10 could definitely not be entered with an uneligible Allstar driver like Chase because the #10 team has not had a win this year or last. The #9 had their only wins and that car his still drove by the driver who won.
Sorry if I confused anyone but maybe it is more clear now.

May 5, 2009 at 3:04 PMNo Brooke you missunderstood what I said, I was saying that they should do just like Hendrick does, put Chase in regular cup races, and I'm sure Richard could pick up some sort of Sponsorship for him. The #10 is missed very much and Chase has yet to drive this year. I think they could figure something out. I hear Truex could be heading to the #02 car with Bass Pro. just a heads up on that. Chase could still do it, if he ran the SHOWDOWN! That's another way it could happen. What about Coca Cola they sponsored the #49 car for Petty Enterprises last year. You may be right though about Chase, Chad McCumbee may be the most likely to drive the #10.
