Penske Racing's Sam Hornish Jr. won't get Budweiser Shootout slot

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Even though some last-minute deals are taking place to lock drivers into the first five races of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season, any new developments will not impact the field for the Budweiser Shootout on Saturday, NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said today.
However, Penske Racing officials confirmed Tuesday night that Sam Hornish Jr. would end up having the 2008 owners points of the Bill Davis Racing No. 22 car and will be locked into the field for the first five events. The former BDR team was 31st in the points last year.
Being 31st instead of 38th in owners points moved Hornish from eighth to sixth among the current Dodge drivers, and the top six plus a seventh “wild card” were eligible for the Budweiser Shootout.
But NASCAR has already set the field for the Budweiser Shootout, and there will be no changes, Tharp said. Richard Petty Motorsports’ AJ Allmendinger remains in the field as the seventh Dodge.
Bill Davis sold his team in December but retained the rights to the points. NASCAR does not allow teams to buy points outright but allows an offseason transfer to another car as long as the original owner has at least a minimal ownership stake in the car.

Feb 4, 2009 at 1:53 PMThere is just to much of this stuff buying points or trading or what ever they do. You should only get into these races if you EARNED you way in. No freebees this is racing not a racing game. Nascar is so strick on some small things that really don't matter but big stuff like this they let slide and its not right.

Feb 4, 2009 at 2:45 PMWhy can't they just race their way in? I know it's about the top drivers/owners and sponsors getting gauranteed spots, but this is out of hand.

Feb 4, 2009 at 4:10 PMWhat a farce NASCAR has become. Oh well. We had already planned that we would not go to any races this year. I think we will not likely watch many races either. I guess I can thank Brian France for freeing up our Sunday afternoons.

Feb 4, 2009 at 4:14 PMYeah, it's really pathetic all this point swapping. And you have to believe that it's a pretty cruddy vote of confidence in your driver if you say "Yeah, I think you're good enough to qualify or race your way into the 500, but since we aren't 100% sure about that, we're going to buy this team's points, and guarantee you a spot in the race." I mean, I bet Clint Bowyer is feeling so wonderful right now, knowing that he's finished top 5 in the last two seasons in points, and now his owner doesn't even fell confident that he can beat a bunch of upstart race teams who likely are just showing up to collect the $260,000 for starting the 500. I know that if I was in his situation, I'd be feeling a little ticked at my boss. I do understand where Childress and Penske are coming from- the 500 is a huge race, and the prize money is huge as well, but I just don't get all the point swapping. NASCAR said the points of the defunct #01 and #15 (or #41, whichever Andretti didn't get) would just go poof and disappear. How about that actually be what happens, hm?

Feb 4, 2009 at 4:48 PMBrian France has turned NASCAR into a circus. He's not gaining new fans like his dad did. He's chasing away the fans his dad drove in, thinking he was making it better. Racing should be the fastest 43 cars out there. Period.

Feb 4, 2009 at 8:32 PMWatch or don't watch, attend or don't attend,I don't care! It's your perogative to handle this mess however you want to but,if you turn your back on NASCAR it will only get worse.I'm sick of hearing "I don't like the changes" or "It isn't the same anymore".Well look around at the world around you and ask yourself "Is it the same as it used to be?".I will continue to support this sport as much as I am capable. My heroes still don't do drugs or steroids. They don't get mixed up in Strip club shootings or shootings in general(except hunting).Yeah they do make a lot of money but there are no 100 million plus contracts! And they're not put on the same level as all these other athletes from other sports.Oh by the way, they are far more accessible than those other spoiled, protected,ego-maniacal "athletes".So do what you want but for those of you with me on this....See you guys on the weekends.Let's party NASCAR style! Oh yeah, so glad Hornish isn't in Sat. cause he's just a wreck looking for somewhere to happen!
