Ryan Newman won't drive the No. 4 for Stewart-Haas Racing next season after all.

Tony Stewart, who'll co-own the team and drive the group's No. 14 Chevrolets in 2009, announced on his Sirius Satellite Radio show Monday night that he is changing Newman's car number to the No. 39 for next season, a Stewart spokesperson confirmed.

The switch comes three days after Stewart formalized plans at Michigan International Speedway for Newman to compete with the No. 4.

Stewart offered two reasons for the change: The No. 39 is special to Newman because he won his first United States Auto Club midget race with the number, and Stewart wanted to leave the No. 4 available to its long-time carrier, Morgan-McClure Motorsports, should the team return to the Sprint Cup Series next year.

Mentioned Drivers: Ryan Newman

Very classy move. Mr Stewart. I agree with you, John. I think they'll be competitive right off the bat.

That move was the classiest thing in Nascar since Robert Yates handed Dale the #88.

I think this shows how well Tony and Ryan will work together next year. It also shows the respect of the sport and the other owners that Tony has. Tony is an all-around good guy.

That is awesome Tony gave Ryan a number that meant alot to him and to leave the number 4 open for Morgan and McClure had to give that team much optimisim. You are a class act Tony Stewart. I am very proud to be a fan.

Tony's actions just reaffirm what I have known all along which is that he is very respectful of the other owners and drivers in that garage. Tony is a good man and I am always gratified whenever the media acknowledges that. Tony and Ryan teamed up will be a force to be reckoned with. I look forward to the 2009 season and for cheering on the #14 and the #39. Go Stewart-Haas Racing.

Coincidentally, the number 39 is also approximately where Newman's car will be ranked after the first ten 2009 Cup races.

And by the by, Tony Stewart will only become "classy" when he doesn't shove racing officials because he doesn't like a ruling, stops savagely and unnecessarily berating other drivers (like Carl Edwards or John Andretti or anyone else Tony might deliberately decide to run into on any given race day), quit disparaging qualified pit reporters with inane and flat out wrong criticisms and figures out how NOT to whine like a 2 Year Old for more than a week. If Tony can do ALL that for THREE YEARS or more (and that's a BIG "if") then he might be worthy to restart on the road to classy respectability. Being a great race car driver who occasionally does ONE thing right for every TWENTY wrongs does NOT make said race car driver suddenly "classy". To describe Tony Stewart as classy is to DENIGRATE every single TRULY CLASSY driver that has ever participated in the sport!

This isn't the first classy thing Stewart has done this year, buying all the tires for Morgan Shepard so that he might participate in a Nationwide race. Classy! Giving of his rare free time to help Chrissy Wallace in the Craftsman Truck Series. Classy! Giving of time, effort and money to Victory Junction gang Camp by holding the Prelude to a Dream at Eldora. Classy Classy Classy Anyone who doesn't think this gives Tony classy respectability ought to do their research before "whining like a 2 year old"
