DARLINGTON S.C. – Penske Racing’s Ryan Newman won't say that winning at Darlington Raceway this weekend would rival winning the Daytona 500 this year – but he does seem to rank it near the top of that list.
Newman says that the 1.366-mile Darlington track, site of Saturday night’s Dodge Challenger 500, is his favorite race track.
Newman participated in a Goodyear tire test there earlier this year and says that he thinks the repaved oval is in good shape. Like other drivers, he applauds how well the track administration did at keeping the shape and character of the track while removing its bumps.
And he thinks the track is ready for a competitive race.
What would it mean to him, though, to add this victory to his list of 13 Cup victories, which includes this season's Daytona 500? Quite a lot. Newman has six finishes of sixth or better in eight races at Darlington but has never won there.
“Obviously, it has changed a little bit with the repave, but, man, it’s a special place,” he said. “We ran second to Jeff [Gordon] at the Southern 500 [in 2002]. We’ve run well here. I’ve always liked it. We’ve always been fast. We’ve some failures and things like that.
“Typically, I’m a conservative driver in the essence that I keep it off the wall and probably limit myself a little bit speed-wise, but I have a good car there at the end, and that will be the goal on Saturday night.”
