Joe Nemechek will celebrate his first anniversary with Furniture Row Racing when he races this weekend at Auto Club Speedway in the Pepsi 400.
Nemechek assumed the Furniture Row ride for the California race last year.
"It's been a fast and furious year with the Furniture Row team, and the good news is that we've come a long way," Nemechek said. "We still have a ways to go, but for a single-car team competing with the mulitcar big dogs, we're holding our own and showing improvement."
Nemechek will need to make the race via qualifying, since the No. 78 team is outside the top 35 in owner points and doesn’t have a guaranteed starting spot at California.
If he does make the race, Nemechek will set a record for Furniture Row, which has started 21 Cup events this year. That ties the 3-year-old team’s record for most races in a season.
"The record is important to everyone on this team because it shows improvement, and that's what you're always looking for in this business," said Nemechek, who has qualified for 12 consecutive races.
In addition, Nemechek will attempt to qualify at the track where he won the pole in 1997 – the track’s inaugural event.
"Winning the pole at the very first race was pretty special," Nemechek said. "I've had a number of good qualifying efforts there, including an outside pole a few years ago."
