MARTINSVILLE, VA. – NASCAR has decided that teams will not be allowed to do an in-season points swap if they do not have a merger.
Michael Waltrip Racing requested Thursday to swap points between its No. 00 and No. 44 teams. That would have allowed David Reutimann to keep his owners points while moving from the No. 00 to replace Dale Jarrett in the No. 44.
Reutimann is now with a team that is 34th in owners points while his replacement, Michael McDowell, is with a team that is 30th in owners points.
The MWR request was the first official request to NASCAR about an in-season points swap this year, and NASCAR made the decision Thursday.
"We did not allow it as it was not a merger and was not the offseason," NASCAR Vice President of Racing Operations Steve O'Donnell said. "This would have applied to all teams."
There had been speculation of other in-season points swaps where teams might want to take advantage of a past champions provisional, including potential swaps at Roush Fenway Racing (Matt Kenseth-Jamie McMurray) and Petty Enterprises (Bobby Labonte-Kyle Petty).
