NASCAR to implement rookie orientation program in February

NASCAR will implement a one-day rookie orientation seminar next February for newcomers to its three national touring series.

The annual program will be designed for rookies and drivers 22 and under, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Wednesday. It will focus on NASCAR rules and policies as well as the adjustment to competing on the national stock-car circuit.

“It’s something we’ve been looking at for the last two or three years,” Poston said. “We looked at what all the other leagues do, and one thing we realized is all the other leagues do this, and there seems to be a lot of benefit both for the league and their participants.”

The program will include University of Central Florida professor Dr. Richard Lapchick of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports to address professional and personal conduct and Aegis Laboratories’ Dr. David Black to address the NASCAR substance-abuse policy.  NASCAR Chairman Brian France also would be one of the presenters with other NASCAR executives, NASCAR’s medical liaisons, series directors, veteran drivers and track operators.

“We want to do this to touch base with drivers that are new to the national series and make sure that they have an opportunity at their very start to get face-to-face with NASCAR executives, to understand the sport and who we are,” Poston said. “It’s really to welcome to the national series, welcome them to the sport and also to answer any questions that they have.”

NASCAR has an 18-year-old age limit for its three national touring series and has toyed with the idea of increasing the age minimum for the Sprint Cup Series. Poston said that is still under consideration.

Would Dale Earnhardt pass muster under such a program?

What kind of a sport are we creating? Will it be one which will attract the fans? Or will it merely satisfy "activists?"

Let Joey Logano teach it. He is already a better driver than some who have been around for awhile and others who rely on family name for rides.

I like the line "It will focus on NASCAR rules and policies". How are they going to teach about something that never seems to have the same set of consequences from week to week!!

They've been looking at it "for years" and suddenly decide to implement it just after news of Danica coming to town hits. More publicity for NASCAR?

I would guess this 1-day sit-down is for Brad since he drives too agressively most of the time. The veteran drivers don't want him running over them. Still don't think Danica will come into NASCAR until way past 2010.

Isn't this though for only 18-22 year olds? How many rookies will we have next year in all three big series combined, much less the number that will be 18-22? It's not a Danica or Brad K thing, it's a young guns thing, but there aren't going to be (m)any that actually attend.

they must be working overtime to figure what the rules are and how to make them even more unknown so they can manipulate the races

LEFTTURN and WERNER...Thanks. I laughed so hard I fell over!!!! But seriously, if they use the Etch a Sketch while driving wouldn't they get a penalty for "actions detrimental to stock car auto racing"?

The veteran drivers seem okay with CArl, Kyle, Mikey,Giliand and Denny running them over why not with Brad? Its noit like Brad is even a rookie next year anyway, either.
