NASCAR says bump-drafting rules not to blame for single-file Talladega racing

TALLADEGA, Ala. – NASCAR’s change in the rules to forbid bump-drafting in the turns worked as planned for the most part and should not be blamed for the single-file racing fans saw for much of the first half of the Sprint Cup Amp Energy 500 Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway, NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said.
“A lot of 500-mile races, when you listen to the teams, they work on their cars, they get their cars to handle and then they log laps during a small portion or the middle third of the race in order to have their equipment ready for the end of the race,” Pemberton said in the garage after the event. “It’s not uncommon of any 500-mile race that you see that. … [The accidents that] happened today, we didn’t have any major incidents in the corner.
“The two wrecks that happened, they happened in the free zone where we weren’t monitoring the bump-drafting or anything like that.”
Pemberton said cars might have gotten a little more strung out than usual, but drivers were just learning how to deal with the new rule in the turns. After the restart on lap 109, the remainder of the 191-lap race was fairly dicey.
“There were times they were not four wide as they may have been in the past and maybe not three wide, and they were [instead] two wide,” Pemberton said. “As the race progressed, many of the drivers got better and better at getting up to the bump in front of them and getting within four or five inches to the guy ahead of them. It’s an art form that they generally have the ability to develop.”
The rule was made because NASCAR saw too many dangerous situations in the practice Friday. During the April Cup race at the track, Phoenix Racing’s Brad Keselowski pushed Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards for a full lap, which was turned at 200.7 mph.
“We don’t dream these things up,” Pemberton said. “A lot of these things come out of the garage area. Drivers that have a lot of experience that are winners and they bring the concerns to us that it is getting too aggressive and I think Friday was evidence how aggressive everybody was.
“Even though they were practicing for Sunday’s race, we saw things there that were more aggressive than we’ve seen in the past and we had some drivers that brought it up to us that they were concerned that the bump-drafting or the hooking up in the corners was not going to be a good thing.”
NASCAR never issued a penalty in Sunday's race. There were times when Sprint Cup Series Director John Darby said something to a crew chief.
“If it was something that was a warning that was like the final warning, we would have put it out on the main channel and we didn’t do that,” Pemberton said. “These guys are very good at what they do. It takes them a very short period of time to figure out the best way around these race tracks.
“As the race went on, guys got a little bit better at how to run the draft, work the draft and pass cars.”

Even Smoke said it was boring and asked for someone to talk to him. Why drive 500 miles to only race in the last 20 laps??? This is crazy and not racing. Then pit stops were slow and teams were taking their time, as no point to rush. Look at the 48 team, they hung out in the back of the pack, and moved up at the end. make it a 50 lap race if no bump draft is allowed. I think they should just get rid of plate racing, and let them race!!

Dega is the last track left that has great racing if Nascar would stay out of it. And Johnson and McMurry should be penelized for NOT racing. That was pathetic. This is what Nascar has brought on. I would almost rather see a road course than single file for the most part. At least the driver has to have talent in the road course. I get so tired of them saying they run those tracks for the fans.... please don't do it on my account.... I hate them!

Let them have some smaller engines, smaller two barrel carbs, anything that doesn't produce 850 horse power so the cars can't reach 200mph. even at slower speeds, you'll still see some good racing. You see good racing at the smaller tracks where they only go 160 or 170 mph. So slow them down another way, so it's not like watching cars on a merry-go-round for 180 laps. They have 4 races where they use restrictor plates, so why not have engines designed just for those tracks. They would probably be cheaper than the engines they use now.

Nov 3, 2009 at 4:09 PMNASCAR has been getting ripped for their bump drafting rule that produced not so exciting racing, but their goal was driver safety so how can you fault them for that. It's easy to sit in the back seat and criticize the driver (NASCAR), there's pro's and con's to any change, may it be a rule or car change and there is no perfect fix. But one thing I've heard a lot is visibility being a problem, drivers can't see through the car their following, so it's hard to see hand gestures and what's going on in front of the car their following. If they can't see either of these they have no reaction time therefore a higher chance of getting caught up in a wreck. But if you increase the driver's visibility they have more time to react and hopefully avoid a wreck.
Report as AbuseNow on another note, if you want to have more exciting racing you need to get rid of the Chase and in doing so you get rid of points racing. NASCAR will never get grid of it and it does give a fans driver at another chance at the Championship but what do you want another chance or more exciting racing.

What Ryan Newman said is the arrogant whining of the diva; he has zero right to think what he does. Your account of the Truck race ignores that they run restricted engines, they could not break away from anyone - what you thought was breaking away was actually attrition of a weak field - and raced exactly the same as the cars - power was and is overrated and not relevant to passing.

Seriously if anyone is entertaining Jimmy Johnson's idea of lowering the banking at Talladega I quit. Racing is suppose to have some danger, risk, and DNFs. The old cars at one time flipped and then the roof flaps were invented. I think the COT needs some more work done to keep it on the ground.
