NASCAR plans no rules changes for Cup cars in 2009

CONCORD, N.C. – There will be no rules changes for the Sprint Cup Series car in 2009, NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said Monday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Earlier this year, many drivers and teams asked for changes to the new model Cup car to help it handle better. But as the car has undergone more testing and racing, NASCAR officials deemed rules changes unnecessary.

“We’re going to remain firm on our rules,” Pemberton said. “There’s no rule changes coming along.”

Pemberton said NASCAR usually talks with teams about the following season’s rules from mid-August to early September. Talks this year indicated teams wanted the rules to remain constant from year to year.

“We’re pleased with the progress teams have made,” Pemberton said. “As the teams have made their improvements, maybe early on they were looking for rule changes, but as they found things to get their drivers and teams competitive, they have come back and said, ‘OK, let’s stay the course on the rules and regulations, and we’ll get another year under their belt.’”

The new Cup car is in its first full season of competition after being introduced for select races in 2007.

I believe NASCAR should have considered replacing the wing on the rear of the car with a spoiler to provider added visabilty thru the car.

As much as I hate the look of the wing I don't think a spoiler will help much if the Nationwide COT is any indication. I would like to see some adjustments in the suspension and that bizarre crabbing down straights.

the wing has made the cars more stable...just how much do the drivers look back...seems to me they rely on spotters nowadays...

What rules? You've got to have some first to be able to change or keep the same ones each year.

Werner, you'd be surprised how much they look out the back window. When the COT debuted at Bristol, I remember the drivers saying the COTs sucked, and that vision out the back of them was terrible. This was at a track whose straightaways are like 500ft long and you'd think rear view would be a spotter thing. Rear view is also a huge thing at Daytona & Talladega, where you better know where that car behind you is or you'll start a huge wreck.

the problem isn't looking out the back, it's seeing through the car in front to avoid wrecks and see to decide which way to go to pass. also look how many accidents happen entering pit road because they can't see clear hand signals.

The main changes for Nascar in 2009 will be LESS VIEWERS on TV,LESS Bodys at the TRACKS,The ONLY way Nascar will pay attention to the race fan is $$$$ stay away from the tracks for awhile, they will HEAR!!!

The COT is a clean air car. Get the lead and you keep it for the most part, which results in boring racing.

I have to agree with this comment: "Grover rickman said: Oct 13, 2008 at 5:31 PM Nascar will change and make new rules to suit themselves, they really think the Race fans are stupid, thats my story and i'am sticking to it!!!" NASCAR seems to make up the rules as they go along. I personally do not like the COT car. Wish they never switched. The races now are so boring at least 90% of the time. I agree with you Robert Wingert. I used to go to the races all the time. Haven't been to one in the last couple years. COT for one and making up the rules as they went. etc. etc. etc.
