NASCAR penalized Robby Gordon 100 driver and owner points, fined his team $100,000 and suspended crew chief Frank Kerr for six races Wednesday for presenting an illegal nose for inspection prior to Daytona 500 practice Feb. 8.

Gordon, who had a week earlier announced he was switching from Ford to Dodge as part of a technical partnership with Gillett Evernham Motorsports, has said that Dodge’s distributor accidentally sent him a prototype Dodge nose that had yet to be approved. The difference is the approved nose has a slightly bigger area that is indented around the headlight than the unapproved nose.

The loss of 100 points drops Gordon from ninth to 40th in the Sprint Cup standings.

Kerr, who can’t return until the April 11-13 race weekend at Phoenix, also was placed on probation through the rest of the year.

Gordon was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing), 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules), and 20-3.10A (unapproved front bumper cover).

Gordon can appeal the penalty.

Pretty harsh penalty for something that wasn't even Robby's fault. Dodge sent him the wrong parts! He never raced or even practiced with the unapproved noses.

I think that this penalty is crap I know Nascar said they wanted to keep the penalties equal and get harsher until this stops. But come on his penalty was before the duels and practice. Last year the penalty Michael got was after qualifying. The only reason he had the nose on his car was because he got it from Dodge. It was not tampered with nor did it gain or provide any aero advantage. I guess he needs to have an even number like 24,48, or 88 for Nascar to look the other way

Imagine that. I guess Robby shouldn't have had such a good finish in the 500. The car was caught before qualifying and he fixed it and should not have had a violation. It is just the same stupid stuff that NASCAR does.

Again NASCAR has shown how biased they are towards some teams. If the dealer sent an incorrect part, so what. You can bet that Robby Gordon would not have wasted funds & time & be that blatant with an illegal part. Even 25 point & a $10,000 would have been overkill. Tom McHugh Hackettstown NJ
