NASCAR officials partake in discussions with Volkswagen motorsports director

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – NASCAR officials have met with Volkswagen motorsports director Hans-Joachim Stuck this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but sources said Sunday that the conversations were more introductory to the sport in nature rather than talks about the manufacturer getting involved.

NASCAR Chairman Brian France has said that foreign manufacturers that have plants in the United States are welcome to come into the sport. When Toyota came in, it started in the Truck series about 18 months after its initial talks with NASCAR. Volkswagen does not have a truck and likely would not be interested in that route.

Stock-car racing showcases less technology than other racing series, and might not fit what Volkswagen would be looking for, sources said.

don't worry, they were just there because they want to be in the Grand Am series, which is owned by NASCAR, and they aren't interested in NASCAR

As soon as NASCAR introduces fuel-injection engines, VW and other German car makers will be interested in joining.

How long before we see a cartoon drawing of a "stock car" based on the Beetle?

Ironic, Bearsden, I was thinking the same thing as I read the article. Does VW make a car worth anything between a Beetle and a Porsche?

Now that VW is #1 automaker in the world and they are building a new U.S. plant in Tennessee, it would be an effective marketing strategy to enter Nascar. They are currently developing new models for the U.S. market. Would woulda thought ten years ago that Toyota would be in Nascar ?

Well maybe a VW team could get into NASCAR with the #53 and have a "Herbie The Love Bug" paint scheme on it, with a daisy taped to the tach...?

my 2002 turbo beetle cleans up just about any car that tries to take me [ or my wife] on. my 71 ghia placed 1st this year @ a car show where all other entraints where detroit cars. the karmann ghia was voted into the top ten list of sexiest cars every made. both these cars get over 30 miles to the gallon. just saying. NASCAR needs everyone it can get. i go to the chicago and michigan races, and lately have left feeling ripped off.

#14 like #16 has said NASCAR puts the COT shell on the chassis' and they all use 358 engines. VW would just be putting a name plate on an IROC NASCAR.

No matter how good the cars are or aren't, I'm all for keeping NASCAR racing "American", but that sure went out when they brought in the Toyota's. If they want all these other cars, then start a "foreign" stock class. Maybe that would actually bring in more excitement and fans also, who know's. But, the BEST thing to do is to GET RID of Brian France and his controling ways.
