CONCORD, N.C.NASCAR has not received a realignment request from Speedway Motorsports to have a race realigned to Kentucky Speedway, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Thursday afternoon.

SMI agreed to purchase the track and SMI Chairman Bruton Smith said he expects to have a Sprint Cup race at the 1.5-mile oval next year. Poston said it is late in the year as the sanctioning process is under way for 2009, but he also wouldn’t rule out the track getting a 2009 Cup date.

“If we do get a proposal, it would be considered in the spirit of the realignment plan and we will make the best decision we can for the
industry,” Poston said. “However, it is an area that is very well served by NASCAR and that’s something that we will have to take a look at and put into consideration.”

NASCAR has said that it will listen to track operators who request realignment of current races to another one of their existing
tracks.

“NASCAR is a national sport and it has a huge fan base, and there still are fans around the country who don’t have the convenience of
getting to a track as easily as the fans in that area, for example the Pacific Northwest or the Mountain area of the Mid-Atlantic area,” Poston said. “There are still areas of the country that we would like to see that still better serve the fans.”

The track seats 66,000 in the grandstands but Smith said he could add as many as 50,000 seats.

The track already plays host to Nationwide and Craftsman Truck Series events.

Is it ready for Cup?

“It’s a terrific facility. … We haven’t looked at it from a Cup standpoint, but I would suspect they would have to make some changes,” Poston said.
