Multicar crash disrupts Sprint Cup final practice at Talladega Superspeedway

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet is towed back to the garage area after being involved in a multicar crash during final practice Friday at Talladega Superspeedway.

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Brian Vickers led the final Sprint Cup Series practice at Talladega Superspeedway on Friday that included a multicar crash involving three Chase For The Sprint Cup contenders, including Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Kasey Kahne, who was second fastest, also was involved and will have to go to a backup Gillett Evernham Motorsports Dodge in Sunday’s Amp Energy 500.
Earnhardt Jr.’s No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet likely suffered a cut tire, according to the team and Goodyear, and triggered a six-car crash. Chase driver Clint Bowyer (Richard Childress Racing) was also involved and forced to use a backup car, as was Earnhardt Jr. Tony Stewart (Joe Gibbs Racing) was also involved in the wreck, but his team was able to fix his car.
“The tire seemed to come apart at the tread and the sidewall,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “We looked at the car and really nothing had fell off of it. … It come out of nowhere. It was hard to see. We looked at some of the replays to see if anything came out from under it – maybe we can find it on a replay there was something we might have run over.
“It’s unfortunate. A lot of man-hours go into the primary. That was our [Budweiser] Shootout car. The car that’s the backup is our [Daytona] 500 car, so we’ve still got a good little race car for the race. We really aren’t any further behind when we were when we unloaded today.
“If you’re going to have that kind of day, this is a great track to have it. You put a lot of work into those cars, and it’s unfortunate for all of the guys that put so many hours into it. They worked really hard today, more than they were expecting to when they got up this morning.”
Other drivers going to backups are David Reutimann (Michael Waltrip Racing) and David Gilliland (Yates Racing).
Vickers turned a fast lap of 192.699 mph to lead the session in his No. 83 Red Bull Racing Toyota. Kahne was next at 192.618, with Petty Enterprises’ Bobby Labonte third at 192.556.
The No. 5 Hendrick Chevrolet, shared by Casey Mears and Brad Keselowski in the practice, was fourth. Chase driver Kevin Harvick (RCR) was fifth.
Sixth through 10th were Scott Riggs (Haas CNC Racing), Gilliland, Earnhardt Jr., Mike Skinner (Red Bull) and Stewart.
Other Chase contenders in the session were Bowyer 12th, Carl Edwards (Roush Fenway Racing) 14th, Denny Hamlin (JGR) 17th, Kyle Busch (JGR) 18th, Jimmie Johnson (Hendrick) 33rd, Greg Biffle (Roush Fenway) 35th and Jeff Burton (RCR) 37th.
Chase driver Jeff Gordon did not practice his Hendrick Chevrolet during the final session.

Oct 4, 2008 at 2:33 AMJealousy is not very flattering.... I hate so many were involved in the "unpreventable accident" of Juniors, especially the chase contenders. I am sure if jr had only known he would blow a tire and tear half the body off he would have gotten off the track. Hopefully Jr has all his bad luck for the weekend out of the way. And poor Kasey he has had bad luck for so many races and I do feel for him. Tony has had his share of bad luck, too; I hope he has his car ready. Peggy, the Junebug does not seem too concern he will be driving the back-up. I think he will do ok in it. AND...they have the names on the back-up car, also. How cool is that?

Us Kahne fans stand behind our driver too, we vote for him for Most Popular Driver. Hell, we got him into the All-Star race, which apparently scared A LOT of Junior fans because Sadler didn't win (which is who they were behind because Junior backed him). He repaid us for all those votes by bringing us home a win. Worst to first. I've never seen any driver more thankful for what the fans did than Kasey was.
