Michael Waltrip Racing looking for sponsors for David Reutimann as well as Waltrip

FONTANA, Calif. – Michael Waltrip wants to race next year but the priority at Michael Waltrip Racing is to fill the sponsorship for Sprint Cup driver David Reutimann next year, MWR vice president and general manager Ty Norris said Sunday.
Depending on how deals fall in the next few weeks, Reutimann could have as many as 12 races open. Aaron’s is going to be the sponsor for half the season for Reutimann.
“We may be as few as six or as many as [needing] 12,” Norris said prior to the Pepsi 500 at Auto Club Speedway. “It depends on how contracts fall the next couple of weeks. … We are going to make some announcements in the next two or three weeks on a number of other [sponsors].”
Waltrip, who is going to be replaced by Martin Truex Jr. next year as the driver of the NAPA-sponsored car, is going to run the Daytona 500 for NAPA.
“Past that, we’re in the starting blocks,” Norris said. “We want to run him in as many races as possible. It’s going to be [a] new expense, so we need to have new sponsorships to do it.”
Not out of the question is a full Nationwide season for Waltrip.
“Michael just wants to race,” Norris said. “He doesn’t feel like he’s done. He’s in the best shape he’s ever been in. He’s mentally there. He’s really working hard in the gym to get ready, and I just think he’s not ready to hang it up.”

Oct 12, 2009 at 6:33 AMReutimann and Waltrip got Aaron's to sign on for the whole year this year, using the old line "do you really want someone else to be on the car when he wins?" It worked once, maybe they can get it to work again. I think it's a sign of how much it costs and how little companies are spending when good drivers can't find sponsorships, and even championship teams are having to close their doors. It's really sad when Top 15 drivers don't know if they will be around next year.

Oct 12, 2009 at 1:03 PMMy feeling is that Aaron's did not make a big contribution for the second 18 races and that part of the deduct was David's pay. Reutimann is "my" driver and one of the most fun drivers to follow in NASCAR. Childers and Shawn (sp?) Reutimann (his spotter) are supportive and the teamwork between the three of them is the best of drivers I have followed over the years (Elliott - maybe the best of the rest with Ford, Rudd - not as good even in the Fatback heyday, Hamlin - with Ford, Waltrip with Slugger at their best, Jarrett with Parrott at their best, Junior with Pops, and Edwards with Osborne durig their first run).

Oct 14, 2009 at 11:47 AMMichael's head is on right enough that he has surrounded himself with good businessmen and good car people. And he has two of the most underrated drivers in Sprint out of his garage (Ambrose and Reutimann). And he had enough sense to fire himself and replace himself with someone who has proven to be good in good equipment. I've always suspected that he could outscore a number of drivers on an SAT. Just because he doesn't see the world like the rest of us do does not mean he is dumb.
