Michael McDowell will replace J.J. Yeley in the No. 46 Sprint Cup car for Whitney Motorsports, a team spokesman confirmed Tuesday.

Yeley had replaced Terry Cook in May as the driver for the startup team after Cook qualified for just three of the first 10 events. Cook failed to qualify for five races and two were rained out. Yeley qualified for seven consecutive races and finished 19th at Daytona in July but then missed five of the next six events.

McDowell has driven this year for Prism Motorpsorts, a mostly start-and-park team, and has qualified for 16 of the 18 events he entered and in which qualifying was not rained out. He drives for MacDonald Motorsports in the Nationwide Series, where he sits 19th in the driver standings while the team is 31st in the owner standings.

Whitney Motorsports, which bought cars from Richard Petty Motorsports after last season, is 41st in Cup owners points.
