Casey Mears returns to the site of his lone Cup series victory with every intention of repeating as Coca-Cola 600 champion.

Mears won last year’s 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on a gas gamble, earning his first victory in his 156th career start. He hasn’t won since, and a switch to Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 5 team for 2008 hasn’t yet yielded the results Mears had hoped for.

"It's good to be back at Lowe's Motor Speedway,” Mears said. “I just want to repeat really bad for myself, for Hendrick Motorsports and the … team. This is pretty much everyone's home track, and winning here is incredible, so I'd like to do it all over again with this team."

Mears’ enduring memory of last year’s victory is the large number of people who came by victory lane to offer congratulations.

"I had been in the series for so long by then and hadn't won a race yet,” Mears said. “But when I did win, I was just amazed at all of the people who stopped by victory lane to congratulate me. I have made so many more friends than I even realized.

“It wasn't just me and my team celebrating that night; it was everyone I had worked with over the past few years. Everyone was celebrating with me, and it was just an incredible moment to realize that. To feel everyone's support, I won't forget that."
