Sterling Marlin (40) is expected to replace Dario Franchitti in next weekend's Coca-Cola 600.
CONCORD, N.C. – Team owner Chip Ganassi expects to have Sterling Marlin in the team’s No. 40 NASCAR Sprint Cup entry for the May 24 Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
Ganassi said that regular driver Dario Franchitti continues to recover from the broken ankle he suffered at Talladega Superspeedway on April 27. The team will continue to monitor his condition to make decisions concerning upcoming events.
“It’s the same old thing,” Ganassi said Saturday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “Drivers all think they’re not that hurt when they get hurt and they all say, ‘I’ll be back in a week or two.’ So we kind of said, ‘OK, great.’ … I think he’s starting to realize now it’s not going to be that quick.
“It looks like Sterling Marlin is going to be driving the car here next week in the 600 and we’re sort of taking it a day at a time after that. Whether it’s the Pocono test or the Dover race, they’re all a day at a time right now.”
Marlin drove for Ganassi from 2001 through 2006.
