Kyle Petty 'crushed' over paint scheme designed to honor his first race
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The paint scheme on Kyle Petty's car in his Automobile Racing Club of America victory 30 years ago at Daytona International Speedway is being replicated on the Richard Petty Motorsports’ No. 44 Sprint Cup car being driven by AJ Allmendinger in the Daytona 500 on Sunday.
And Petty didn’t know a thing about it.
Kyle Petty has no involvement in the new team co-owned by his father, Richard, Boston Ventures and Gillett Evernham Motorsports.
“I was crushed,” Petty told reporters Saturday. “I was hurt and I'm not gonna get over it for a while. And that's a personal thing. That's me. That's not got anything to do with anything else.
“That was my paint job and my car and my number and my stuff from my first win.”
Petty doesn’t plan to watch the Daytona 500. It will be the first without a Petty since 1965, and Kyle Petty can’t stomach not racing in it.
“I'm headed to North Carolina,” Petty said. “And I won't watch it on TV.”
