Kyle Busch recipient of quarterly NMPA Pocono Spirit Award

Kyle Busch’s generosity to a former driver prompted voters to name him the fourth-quarter recipient of the National Motorsports Press Association Pocono Spirit Award.
 
Busch was recognized for donating $100,000 to Sam Ard and his family after tying Ard’s single-season victory mark with his 10th win of the NASCAR Nationwide Series season, a win that came at Texas Motor Speedway.

Ard, a two-time series champion, suffers from both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, creating massive medical bills.
 
“Sam Ard is one of the pioneers of this [series], and to be tied with at 10 wins is something that’s pretty spectacular and really, really special to me,’’ Busch said after the win. “I’m going to try to help him out and see what I can do. It’s not much, but it’s something that can try to help.’’
 
The NMPA Pocono Spirit Award is designed to recognize character and achievement in the face of adversity, sportsmanship and contributions to motorsports. Each year, quarterly winners are selected, and an overall winner is selected by a vote of the NMPA membership. The 2008 overall winner will be announced during the NMPA's annual convention and awards ceremony in January 2009.
 
Also receiving votes were Jamie McMurray, Jeff Gordon and NASCAR.
 
NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Juan Pablo Montoya was the first-quarter winner. Longtime NASCAR photographer T. Taylor Warren was the second-quarter winner, and team owner Richard Childress claimed the third-quarter honor.

    I cant stand Kyle Busch. This was and is a very great thing he did. Hopefully he will stop being such as a-- and grow up and become a good person.He does deserve this award though. Kyle stop being an idiot and more fans will stop booing you.

How insulting and attacking and unnecessary. What makes NASCAR great is that we all have a favorite driver, and we all have a driver we love to hate. Kyle brings that to the sport-he's the guy everybody loves to hate right now, and he is filling the role quite nicely. Dale Sr. was it, Darrell Waltrip was it, Jeff Gordon was it. It's a right of passage in many ways. I'm not a Kyle fan, that's for sure. I think he's co cky and arrogant and I don't like his driving style. I don't like his "win at all costs" attitude and I don't like the disrespect he shows to other drivers. Those are all things that I think he'll grow out of and he'll become a great. But no one is denying the guy can DRIVE. He can drive the wheels off anything on 4 wheels, and I voted for him for Driver of the Year. Not LIKING him does not make someone a LOSER or an IDIOT. And not all of us that dislike Kyle are Jr. fans either. I'm a Tony fan-Kyle's TEAMMATE. I still don't like him. But bottom line-Kyle isn't losing any sleep over those boos. The boy is laughing all the way to the bank-as well he should. He brings a great controversy and drama to the sport. It wouldn't be fun if we didn't have somebody we love to hate.

    Sarah, I agree that it is not right to attack someone personally because they do not like a certain driver...it bothers me when people do that...especially the Soap Opera comment- sexist! That being said, you really can't say "no one is denying the guy can drive" because there are a whole lot of people that do deny that. In fact they go so far the other way and say that he can't drive for beans! (Most of them, NOT ALL, but most of them say that because they are die hard fans of another driver like Jr.) Just wait until 11 days from now when they are on #10 in the Top 30 Sprint Cup drivers series......(Kyle's finishing position) This site will probably crash because there will be so many people rushing to type their hate letters to him. I respect your opinions, Sarah, even though we disagree on Kyle Busch, you still have the maturity & respect to acknpwledge what so many of the Kyle Bashers cannot....and that is that the guy CAN DRIVE!! I'm sure you are excited for next year to start so you can see Tony & his new team, Then again you're probably not thrilled about having to buy all new fan merchandise!     Kudo's to Kyle! This award is more prestigious than the Sporting News so called "Most Beautiful"(which didnt list Kyle)! BTW, Jr. is my favorite driver, and if I spent my hard earned money on a race, it would be to enjoy the event, NOT to go there and boo another driver, maybe some day the ways of the "redneck" will fall by the wayside, not holding my breath tho!!

    How can anyone say they can't stand a certain driver they have never meet them. There are a few drivers i am not fond of but none i can't stand well maybe one. Anyway i am glad Kyle got this award. As i have said on line many times for those of you that don't know this, when Kyle drives the #51 truck he gets NO pay the money goes to the team. He does a lot of good things that most people don't know about. I for one think he has made the races better especially this past year. I doubt i would watch the trucks if Kyle wasn't driving in them and he only makes the nationwide races more fun to watch. And the cup well what can i say. To a lot of us Nascar without Kyle would be like peanut butter without jelly. I look forward to the 2009 season and watching Kyle. Would be great to see him win the championship. Yea you Kyle haters there are a lot of us Kyle fans.

    Unles you have hung out ad or spent a lot of time with someone how can you hate them I have many friends and have had one sometimes say I don't like that friend, then later after getting to know each other they become good friends, I've seen it with Family's as well, Anyway I now feel better finding that a lot more like Kyle as I do, or at least can sure appreciate what he can do with a car. I also remember when he was trying to get into Cup Kurt kept telling owners you don't know what you are missing not signing Kyle.

    Thanks to Kyle for helping out Sam and thanks #11 for the info about when he races the #51 truck. Kyle is not my among my top favorites but I am NOT a hater of him.     I can't say I like Kyle, I don't know him personally. I can say I don't like some of his remarks, and actions he has done while racing. However, a lot of people said the same about the guy I used to root for. Remember him? Man in Black, Intimidator, 'ol number 3? Anyone? Kyle is on his way to maybe changing what I think of him. But that's what happens with age and experience. I hope he does it again, you know, do something mature and helpful without being asked.     In case you guys don't remember Kyle's first win in the cup with Hendrick, he dedicated those winnings to the Katrina hurricane victims. Until you know someone or have walked in their shoes... Kyle is who he is a very talented driver and being the perfectionist he is and the age he is... he is going to say somethings people don't agree with. I am absolutely his number one fan...     LOL-keep in mind when I say I don't like Kyle, I mean I don't like the persona he is/has projected. Of course I don't know the guy, and I've seen some interviews/times when he's been followed around, that I see glimpses of someone I'd probably really like. I think he could yet garner my affection. lol I started disliking Kurt when he made the comment about the "old washed up has-beens, or should I say never-weres" in the back of the pack. But, Kurt was young, arrogant, and disrespectful. I think he's grown and I've actually enjoyed some of his interviews-although I admit I secretly giggled when it came out that Tony just might have punched him in the nose in the NASCAR hauler when he mouthed off! But, in general, I think everybody in NASCAR has someone they love to hate--and I think it's more fun that way. And these guys out there racing-you know, they're like lawyers (I'm a paralegal)...they go at each other on the track (in the courtroom), then go out for a beer afterward! And that's just fun to know. I admire Kyle's driving and I hope he comes into his own with his attitude too-just like Dale Sr., Jeff Gordon, and Darrell Waltrip-those guys that people hated back in the day that are now beloved drivers and commentators.

    Kudos to you KYLE.. I've followed your generosity through the few short years you've been around and it's astonishing for someone so young.

    I know there are more fantastic things to come out of you in the future (a LONG future for sure!) and I appreciate seeing our youth act and represent NASCAR in such a giving way. Keep up the good work on the track and off!

    I (ALSO) was a Kyle (and Kurt Busch) fan way before it was cool, it would be impossible to watch these 2 boys and not see the talent they have. Even if he wasn't 'my' driver you can betch I'd be pretty impressed with him.

    And, the day he stops trucks or Nationwide, will be the day I stop watching.. I LOVE action, suspense, competition and talent.. everything Kyle brings!
