DOVER, Del. – Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch suggested Friday that Dale Earnhardt Jr. may be the one at fault for the poor performance this season that prompted team owner Rick Hendrick to replace crew chief Tony Eury Jr. with Lance McGrew on an interim basis.
“[McGrew’s] got his hands full, I guess, having to deal with what’s going on,” Busch said Friday at Dover International Speedway, site of Sunday’s NASCAR’s Sprint Cup race. “If Junior doesn’t run well, then he’s going to be the problem. It’s never Junior. It’s always the crew chief.”
Busch, who left Hendrick after the 2007 season to make room for Earnhardt Jr., said Hendrick had to “make the most popular driver in the sport competitive.”
Busch, who worked with McGrew in what is now known as the Nationwide Series, had little to say about the interim crew chief, who will join Earnhardt Jr. next week after Brian Whitesell fills in this weekend.
“You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do, I guess,” Busch said. “[Earnhardt Jr. is] the one who brought that crew chief in; he’s the one who pulled so hard to bring Tony Eury Jr. in. It looked like it was working there in the beginning. It hasn’t worked since the summer of last year, really. Whatever makes him better, I guess.”
