CONCORD, N.C.Kurt Busch scored the first top-five finish for Dodge’s new engine in Saturday’s Bank of America 500 Sprint Cup race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Busch first ran the new engine at Kansas Speedway two races ago, when he finished two laps down in 30th.

At Charlotte, after running in or around the top 10 most of the race, Busch surged to the top five after the final pit stop.

“It was great to see the front and sniff a little bit of the lead of the race with 25 to go,” Busch said. “It’s a good feeling to know that it was right there and we ended up with a solid finish.  Racing in the top five, we haven’t done as of late.  Give credit to Penske Racing and the overall group effort.”

Busch said his No. 12 team used a setup combining elements from teammates Ryan Newman and Sam Hornish Jr. and made adjustments on that during the race.

“The Penske Racing effort is showing signs of communication and strength in moving forward,” Busch said. “Secondly, this was the second race for the R6P8 engine and I felt confident in it with the power that it gave me and the reliability that it showed me.”

Busch said the new engine shows low water temperature, which helps because the team can put more tape on the front end of his cars to help downforce, but oil temperatures have been too high.

“That just makes it more uncomfortable in the car,” Busch said. “Ideally you want the water to be warmer, and the oil is going to be shooting up towards 270.  To me that's a bit warm.  Then this time around we didn't have any water issues.  We were squirting out water last time even though we were running cool.  We've made progress in just two races with this engine and it shows some sign of durability.  We need that all-important more power.”

Not that I've ever been a fan of Kurt-- but couldn't you guys come up with a BETTER photo to accompany this story... One better bespeaking a Nascar CHAMPION... Than a photo of Kurt in "mid-lick"-- licking his earphones before putting on his helmet?!
