Kurt Busch goes to backup car after wreck in final Budweiser Shootout practice
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Kurt Busch was the only victim in a crash in the final Budweiser Shootout practice Thursday night, getting a tap from Juan Pablo Montoya that sent him into the wall.
Busch will have to go to a backup car for the Saturday night event at Daytona International Speedway.
“It was just a bump draft and I got turned,” Busch said. “The closing rate is more than what we anticipated and you have to learn how to lift off the throttle.”
There are no more practices scheduled for the event, which will be the first with the 63/64ths-inch restrictor plate, a 1/16th-inch increase over a year ago. A seven-car wreck in the first practice resulted in five drivers (Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray, Greg Biffle, Mark Martin and Denny Hamlin) going to backup cars.
Leading the final practice was Richard Petty Motorsports’ Kasey Kahne, who posted a speed of 191.673 mph. He was followed by Red Bull Racing’s Ken Schrader, Roush Fenway Racing’s Matt Kenseth, Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Tony Stewart.
