SONOMA, Calif. – Matt Kenseth isn't prone to overstatement, so to hear the driver speak glowingly of his performance in Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway speaks volumes.
Kenseth and his Roush Fenway Racing team finished eighth in the road-course race, his first top-10 finish in nine races at the track.
"I feel like we won," Kenseth said. "This is the only track on the circuit that we had never had a top-10 at, and we fixed that today."
It was also one that vaulted Kenseth into the top 12 in the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings. That puts him in position to make the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup and contend for the championship once more. Kenseth has been in the Chase every year since the format was introduced in 2004.
Although 10 races remain before that field is set, Kenseth says it's time to be thinking about points.
"I don't think it's ever too early to look at it - you always look at it on the way home, especially if you're moving up, to see where you're at and see what happened," he said. "But, the bottom line is really you do the best you can every week and try to finish as high as you can, and try to lead laps. Do all that [and] the points take care of themselves - the higher you finish, the more points you get.
"So really, it's not strategy when you race hard and try to be smart and do the right things, and hopefully get some good finishes and get back in it."
