It wasn’t so long ago that people were talking about Kasey Kahne being one of the hottest drivers on the Sprint Cup circuit.
What happened?
After scoring three wins in four races, including the non-points-paying Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte, Kahne’s results have been little more than mediocre. He has just one top-10 finish and no top-fives in his last four outings.
If Kahne is concerned about his recent mini-slump heading into Sunday’s Allstate 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he isn’t talking about it.
“I know that we are progressing as a team, as a company,” the Gillett Evernham Motorsports driver said. “All the cars are better and the things that we are doing to the race cars are much different from what we did four months ago. So I think, as a company, we are definitely progressing. I’ve really learned a lot about [NASCAR's new model car] and how to make it turn and still be on the race track.
“That was our biggest problem. I feel like we’re really close to being more competitive than we have been.”
Based on past performances, Kahne should be good at Indy. In four starts at the Brickyard, he has two top-five finishes, including a runnerup finish to Joe Gibbs Racing’s Tony Stewart in 2005.
In that race, Kahne led 39 laps.

“Winning at the Brickyard and the Daytona 500 are on the top of my list,” Kahne said. “I think it depends on what type of racing background you have which one is more important to you. For me, coming up in the Sprint Car ranks, I raced in the Indianapolis area a lot and learned early on how significant winning at the Brickyard was.
“When you think about the drivers that have won at Indy throughout the years it would mean a lot to be able to add my name to that list. We’ve been close a few times and it’s certainly a victory I’d love to pull off.”
