CONCORD, N.C. - While Kasey Kahne would certainly like a guaranteed spot in Saturday night's NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe's Motor Speedway, the Gillett Evernham Motorsports driver doesn't claim that he deserves one.
Despite being a seven-time winner in NASCAR's top series, Kahne must race his way into the event because he hasn't won since 2006 and isn't a past all-star race winner or a past series champion.
Kahne must finish first or second in Saturday night's Sprint Showdown, or be the winner of a Sprint All-Star fan vote, to become eligible for the 100-lap main event.
"It's completely fair," the driver of the No. 9 Dodge said. "I think you should be in this race because you've won this race in the past or you've raced good the season before. We didn't race good last year and we've never won this race. ... I shouldn't be in that race and if we don't run any better than what we just did in practice, we probably won't be in it tomorrow night either. It's just disappointing."
While Kahne has been better overall this season than last, he's 14th in the series standings and still in championship contention after missing the Chase for The Nextel Cup in 2007 he said on Friday at Lowe's Motor Speedway that his team still has a ways to go.
"You look at what we do as far as practice and qualifying goes and take away wrecking last week during qualifying we usually are decent at that point. We get in the race and the first run we're a top-10 car and then from there it's the adjustments. The adjustments are off," Kahne said. "To me it's just the cars are just not where they need to be to go fast. It just goes back to the race car. As far as being a little better in the points, we're just a little more consistent and other guys aren't.
"We really haven't ran that great in the last month, two months. The consistency's why we're better in the points but as far as winning races and things we're still a long, long ways from there."
