HOMESTEAD, Fla. – After contact with Tony Stewart resulted in a flat tire and a meeting with the wall on lap 116 of the Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Juan Pablo Montoya’s crew was able to get him back on track. It didn't turn out to be just so the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing driver could end the season running at the finish of the race.
Monotya returned to the track on lap 146, and 10 laps later, Montoya tapped Stewart, sending him spinning on lap 156.
NASCAR then parked Montoya for two laps for aggressive driving. Both Montoya and Stewart were able to continue and finish the race, and that’s where the fireworks ended as Montoya was able to park his car inside the garage and leave the area before Stewart could even get back to the hauler.
Stewart finished 22nd and wound up losing a spot in the standings, finishing his inaugural year as Stewart-Haas Racing co-owner in sixth.
Montoya ended up 32 laps down in 38th and fell two spots in the standings, finishing eighth in his third NASCAR season and the first where the Colombian driver made the Chase For The Sprint Cup.
Neither driver spoke to assembled media outside of their haulers after the event.

Nov 22, 2009 at 9:14 PMI have to say that Tony got what he deserved, and so did Montoya. Juan hit Tony and tony hit back. Juan did no damage with his tap to Tony, he had a run and Tony slammed the door on him. Tony should have expected a "Chrome Horn". He then slammed into the side of Juan and sent him into the wall and caused him to lose 27 laps. What did he expect from Montoya? I like both drivers and to me this was just "Racing in NASCAR"

When someone doesn't give he pulls some chickensh*t move, then wants to pout like some little snot when it doesn't go his way. I'm just sorry JP didn't punt him to the moon.

Nov 23, 2009 at 11:18 AMI loved when Tony gave Montoya the rub! I have been annoyed with the way J.P. has been racing people lately, not with the rubbing he does but with the way he always says its not his fault. Come on Montoya just admit that you run into people and that I can respect. Montoya could have touched his brake when Stewart used the slide job on him and chose not to. He chooses to run into people alot. If he would just admit that he chooses to run into them I would have more respect for it. And he has to know that some of these guys are going to give it right back to him. Gordon let him off a couple weeks ago and so have some others. I've seen him try and push Jimmie around at sonoma and Jimmie ran into his door right back. Guy's like Montoya and Hamlin who think they are immune to retaliations irk me. If you dish it out just be man enough to take it back! Trading paint is great and part of stock car racing. I can't wait to see Montoya and Keselowski go at it! That slide job is used on drives every week and they choose not to blast the guy in the rear end that does it!

Nov 23, 2009 at 11:25 AMI have been watching some of the NASCAR shows and they are saying this is "one thing" the sport needs. They didn't address anything about drivers, fans getting hurt or killed. They didn't address the costs of torn up cars or sponsorships either. The comment on TV was said they would want to have one of these drivers in their cars because of the excitement it brought. Aggressive driving has been part of NASCAR as long as the sport has been here. The drivers of back when seemed to be a lot tougher than some of these drivers today. A lot of people disagree with this and that is what NASCAR and these talk show hosts hope for. They want to see and hear the likes and hates of fans which make NASCAR interesting. That is why a lot of fans come to the races, in hopes of seeing a wreck or two. When it is done intentionally, it really draws the crowd to their feet and you hear the noise whether they are against it or for it. Brian France has stated the sport needs aggressive driving. A lot of fans want it and NASCAR are now saying they are listening to what the fans want. This is not the only thing that has been discussed as to what the sport needs. Those are for a different article. What happened last night sure got my attention as well as anyone watching or who was there. I had to laugh too and knew when Montoya got back out there, he was going to do it again. It sure would have changed the outcome of the Championship Title owner if Jimmie Johnson had been caught up in it and caused him not to finish 28th or better.

Nov 23, 2009 at 4:59 PMFLIPPIN-SWEET-99, NASCAR is not blind to anything except what they choose to be blind to. Now they are saying aggressive driving is good for the sport and they will pick and choose who can and who can't drive aggressively and who will and who won't be penalized for it. In other words, they are now grasping at straws to get the fans back interested in NASCAR racing. It's already working because of comments like you see on this article and other articles like Brad and Denny's. Also the article's where Denny openly admitted he would get Brad and he did. Not to mention all the emails where fans agree it is good for the sport. It's amazing they can't figure out how to keep a car on the ground at the SuperSpeedWays, so the racing would be exciting without the drivers being concerned about getting airborne and getting themselves or fans killed or seriously injured. So what do they do??? They make the racing boring and may as well said, "no racing" at DEGA and someone gets airborne anyway. There have always been wrecks (the big one) at Dega, but if you can't bump draft there, what is the point of even racing then? I've always liked a little aggressive driving or maybe I should say rubbin and tradin paint but not to the point of putting someones life in danger, but where do you draw the line? Then again every time they strap into a car, there is always a chance someone could get injured or killed even in the safe COT cars. After all they are man made! That's just part of racing. Sorry about bringing up Dega but I am still aggravated about it. Peopke can face it because it has been proven that more fans want to see wrecks than those who don't. Aggressive driving = wrecks.

Nov 23, 2009 at 5:42 PMEven the announcers were saying that everyone should let Montoya go since he is the most aggresive driver on the track. He just chose to be aggressive to another driver, who being a better driver, knew HOW to retaliate without being penalized. I would have loved to see Montoya and Cryle get together--Whew!!!

Nov 23, 2009 at 6:15 PMWhen Stewart did his slide job on Montoya, who had a run on top, he should have allowed room for the faster car. But NO! everyone put on their brakes for Whopper boy. Was it a race or brake test? His payback was was a lot less than what Tony dished out. If I had been Montoya he would not have finished the race, and NASCAR would not have had to worry about a penalty for Stewart.

Nov 23, 2009 at 6:34 PMSend the foreigner home. There are a lot of American drivers available. Of course Target is a foreign company getting rich off of Americans, so they will probably sponsor foreigners only. I don't shop @Target and never will so it wouldn't bother me if NASCAR, meaning Ganassi, lost this sponsorship.

Nov 23, 2009 at 9:02 PMBeen a Stewart fan since he started and like what he has done for the sport. You want excitement here you go. Bring back the old point system and bamm you have racing like the old days. Everyone is part of the action, no hey I didn't make the chase so my season is over, no lets get out of Jimmies way, yeah Tony got what he deserved but he's a true racer. Why doesn't anyone have the balls to move Johnson out of the way and go under his bumper and put him in the wall just because it is racing. Johnson had a great car but laid back in 6th and 7th all night out of harms way. Race like you want to. If Jimmie wins another one next year just pull the trigger and kill the sport. How does his car always run great and don't tell me how great he is and how great Chad is, something is up somewhere. We need racing to be what it was, not hey move out of the way here comes Jimmie don't bump him you'll get in trouble. Earnhardt Sr. would have had a field day on this guy. I was under the impression all the cars were the same. Could have fooled me. I could ramble on about a lot of things but we need some real team rivalrys and some aggresive driving to bring the sport back to guts and glory. You'll fill the seats in a heartbeat. Wreck Jimmie a few times during the year and maybe he won't make the chase, how good would that be. Go Tony 2010

Nov 24, 2009 at 12:58 AMTony is my driver, cut and dry. Should he have come down on Pablo, I think Pablo deserved it. All race long he was showing aggression above and beyond the norm. His disrespect for the other drivers (including Johnson), is no less than flagrant. Many other drivers wanted to do what Tony did but didn't. Tony called him on it and he knew it. It pizzed him off and he did what any lunatic would do. He Keselowski'd him. And if you don't know what that is, you've never been hit from behind.

Nov 24, 2009 at 1:01 AMI agree with you #44. Everyone just moves over for Johnson. Did you hear him whining over his radio saying that Bowyer was racing him too hard early in the race, and that he shouldn't have been. Well um Jimmie he is supposed to race hard that's what he gets paid to do!!! Don't like it go home and let the real men race. As they always say: rubbins racin...

Nov 24, 2009 at 2:00 PMWhat a stupid penalty. 2 laps when you're already 39 laps down? It's about time for NASCAR to start parking these drivers that intentionally spin drivers for payback. Montoya should have been parked plain and simple. Hamlin should have not only been parked in the nationwide race, also the cup race. Then maybe these drivers will give each other a little more respect. Moving guys is one thing...intentionally wrecking them is just dirty racing and should be penalized immediately
