Joe Nemechek has fond memories of the site of this weekend’s Camping World RV 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race – and with good reason.

The site is the 1.5-mile Kansas Speedway, where Nemechek scored an upset victory in 2004. Nemechek also won the pole for that race, as well as the race in what was then known as the Busch Series that weekend.

"When I enter Kansas Speedway, it's hard not to think about the past," said Nemechek, driver of the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet. "As you can imagine, I have a comfort zone for the track. I feel this team is ready to have a breakout race, and Kansas would be an ideal place for that to happen."

Nemechek and the team seem due for a solid race after crashing out of four of the last eight races, as well as having other mechanical issues.

Last weekend at Dover International Speedway, Nemechek finished 35th after blowing a right-front tire.

"I keep on saying we need a clean race to get an honest assessment of where we're at," Nemechek said. "I feel we are improving, but it's hard to gauge your progress when you have accidents and flat tires. We just need some of my old Kansas magic."

Of course, there is no magic in Sprint Cup racing, other than working hard in trying to improve.

"Nothing comes easy in this sport," Nemechek said. "It's all about a strong work ethic and a never-give-up attitude. When you have those qualities the dividends will eventually pay off. That's why I am excited to be a part of this Furniture Row Racing team."
