Veteran NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Joe Nemecheck has a brand new race car for Sunday’s AMP Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

Although Nemechek was heavily disappointed that his pole-winning No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Chevy was wrecked on the final lap of the spring race at Talladega, he comes to the 2.66-mile facility with renewed enthusiasm.

"From all indications, we have a better superspeedway car than we had the last time we showed up in Talladega," said Nemechek, whose best career finish at Talladega was third the fall race in 2000. "I was crushed after our pole-winning car got wrecked on the final lap. But right now after seeing data from the wind tunnel, I am pumped about bringing this car back to Talladega."

Team general manager Joe Garone also said numerous wind tunnel tests were conducted on Nemechek’s car in order to help handle the draft and turbulence associated with racing on the high banks of Talladega.

"We are cautiously optimistic that we'll have another strong superspeedway car in Talladega," said Garone. "You never know until the car is actually on the track, but we sure liked what we saw in the wind tunnel and in test sessions."

Nemechek strongly believes that his team has an upper hand over the competition thanks to its use of Hendrick Motorsports engines.

Nemechek, who is currently 38th in the standings and must rely on speed to make Sunday’s race because he is outside the top-35 group guaranteed starting spots, is confident he can have a solid day at Talladega.

"Our past results on the big tracks are encouraging," he said.

Out of the other three restrictor-plate races this season (Daytona 500, Aaron’s 499 and the Coke Zero 400), Nemechek has finished each of the other three restrictor-plate races this season – the Daytona 500 and Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway and Aaron’s 499 at Talladega – to give him optimism for this weekend.

"Our superspeedway cars not only qualified well, but also drove well during the race," he said. "I am confident we'll have the equipment for a good showing this weekend. We just need to stay out of trouble. Obviously, that's easier said than done at Talladega."
