TALLADEGA, Ala. – Jimmie Johnson said Friday he was “shocked” to learn of the tax-evasion charges made against his friend and attorney Alan Miller.
Miller, a prominent attorney who represents several NASCAR drivers, including Johnson and Casey Mears, was indicted Thursday for allegedly helping IndyCar Series driver Helio Castroneves hide millions of dollars in income.
A federal indictment accuses Miller of directing Castroneves in failing to report $5.55 million in income to the Internal Revenue Service between 1999 and 2002.
He faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted.
Johnson said he will maintain a relationship with Miller until he learns all the facts.
“At this time, Alan has been my attorney since I was 15, has been a great friend and has helped me with a lot of different things,” Johnson said Friday. “As of now, everything is still the same.
“[I’m] learning a lot as time goes on here, and there’s still a lot to be investigated and uncovered moving forward. I’m certainly keeping my eyes on the subject and trying to figure out what’s all going on.”
Johnson said he uses an outside group – not Miller – to help with his taxes and added he’ll protect himself and his family if necessary. But Miller, he said, has never done anything untoward.
“Everything I’ve done with Alan, he has respected my thoughts and me as a driver as if he was a parent of some sort,” Johnson said. “He’s really done a phenomenal job for me...I’ve never seen anything out of character from him. I’m shocked. I know he’s shocked, and as time goes on, we’ll all learn and understand more.”
Miller's attorney, Michael Tein, defended Miller's actions.
"He acted at all times completely lawfully. He is 1,000 percent innocent," Tein told The Associated Press. "This case is pure harassment by the government in order to try to indict a famous person and get press."

Oct 3, 2008 at 2:28 PMIts terrible, you never know who you can trust. I think of all the child stars and many others that were taken. I hope this isn't true. Johnson seems like one of the good guys. Trust is a bad thing to lose. I like Castroneves. Interesing that his business manager is his sister.

What is really sad is that Alan is a friend,I'm sure that hurts Jimmie.Hope everything turns out well for them.

Oct 3, 2008 at 10:59 PMIt's really amazing how far this has gotten... I just read an ESPN article describing Helio's predicament. Provided it isn't overdoing anything, the way Helio is being portrayed is worse than some of the murderers that get arrested.
As for this article, Jimmie needs to watch out. When your friends with someone arrested for something, it can be bad for you. He needs to watch closely what happens in the next few months and do everything right or else he may get involved not of his own doing.
