Jimmie Johnson paces Saturday's first Sprint Cup practice

HAMPTON, Ga. – Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson logged the fastest lap during the first of two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice sessions today at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Johnson, who qualified 16th, ran a fast lap of 189.694 mph during the session. Mark Martin (Hendrick Motorsports) was second with a lap of 188.700 mph.

Denny Hamlin (Joe Gibbs Racing), Kurt Busch (Penske Racing) and Kasey Kahne (Richard Petty Motorsports) rounded out the top five.

Polesitter Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Hendrick Motorsports) was seventh, while points leader Kevin Harvick (Richard Childress Racing) was 19th.

The second Sprint Cup practice session in preparation for Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 is scheduled for 12:20 p.m. EST today.
