Jimmie Johnson named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year

Four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson was named Monday as Male Athlete of the Year by members of The Associated Press. The Hendrick Motorsports driver is the first race car driver to win the award.

Editors at newspapers which are members of the AP vote on the award. According to the AP, Johnson received 42 to beat tennis player Roger Federer (30 votes) and Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt (29).

Albert Pujols, Kobe Bryant and Tiger Woods, who was named athlete of the decade last week, each received nine votes.
