Final Talladega crash wipes out Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon – and championship race?

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson seems to do no wrong in NASCAR's Chase For The Sprint Cup.

Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Amp Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway was just another example of that.

Johnson decided to run at the back of the lead draft for most of the race to try to avoid the big crashes that generally plague restrictor-plate races. With a handful of laps remaining, Johnson decided to try to move forward, but couldn’t make much headway.

Then, with five laps remaining, Stewart-Haas Racing's Ryan Newman flipped down the backstretch in a horrific crash that forced NASCAR to display the red flag. Johnson crew chief Chad Knaus decided to bring the No. 48 Chevrolet to pit road to top off the fuel tank, and Johnson restarted far away from the top 10.

But while that strategy wasn’t a winning one, it was the right one for Johnson. As other cars ran out of fuel as the race went to a green-white-checkered finish, Johnson moved up.

Another multicar wreck brought on another caution period and ended the race with Johnson in sixth place.

“To be honest with you, the strategies completely backfired,” Johnson said. “The only thing that saved our butts was Chad's decision [to pit] for fuel. We were in big trouble, 25th or something on that red flag. So all the credit goes to Chad and making us come down pit road and put some fuel in that thing. That was really the strategy that did it.

“So we could have been running up front, and he could have had that ‑ I don't think he would have because a lot of guys stayed out. But his whole decision to pit put us in a position to finish well.”

With Johnson’s teammates and closest pursuers in the Chase crashing with a lap to go, Johnson extended his series lead to a commanding 184 points over teammate Mark Martin and 192 over teammate Jeff Gordon.

Johnson could clinch his fourth consecutive Cup title by leaving the Nov. 15 race at Phoenix leading by more than 195 points. He also can wrap up the championship by finishing 10th or better in the final three races.

“I'm not going to let up and lose focus to the job I need to do and allow the championship to be in the forefront of my mind until it's mathematically locked out,” Johnson said. “I can lose [161] points next week if I miss a shift and blow the engine at the start of the Texas race and Mark has a perfect day.

“So with all that in mind, yes, I am feeling much better about things. I was so concerned about this race. I thought I was going to lose points with about three or four to go. So to have it turn around and lead with points over the guys, I didn't expect it. Very, very good situation we're in.”

Still, nothing changes for his team, Johnson said.

“But I just can't stop doing what I do, how the team does their thing, how we prepare, and let that in until there is no chance because racing doesn't have any feelings,” Johnson said. “Racing will reach up and bite you at any point and anything can happen. So we're in a better position, for sure. Our strategy might change some moving forward until … we can get to Homestead. But we've just got to keep doing what we've been doing and try to close this thing out as soon as possible."

Awesome! Great call from Chad, they made the most out of what could have been a very costly race.

A few Top10s now and the fourth title is in - Wohooow!

I agree Toad... Jimmie didn't race today.. He just drove around until the crashing was over with... No contest ! BFD that he scored more points... I suppose if we are dumb enough to continue to watch NASCAR, we deserve what we got.

That kind of shows why so many people hate Jimmie, drivers just don't credit for being smart from the typical fan.

What was he supposed to do? Risk everything to gain a few points even though he had a comfortable points lead? Championships are won by being smart, not being stupid.

But I guess some fans just can't relate to that, a shame really! They adore drivers who do stupid stuff and run their mouth all the time, yet none of these types have what it takes to challenge Jimmie and his team.

It's not about who talks the loudest guys...

I don't have any thing against Jimmie. But to me riding around in the back of the pack isn't racing. And as good as Jimmie is suppose to be he should of been up front racing. His car seem to be handling all right. I felt sorry for the drivers that raced all day. and ended up wrecked, and Jimmie finished 6th.

Yes he was riding around in the back all day, Chads pit call to top up and 2 wrecks got him his 6th place finish and surely 4th straight Championship. I applaud Mark Martin for going all out all day, he was actually racing not sandbagging like Johnson and I was dissapointed to see him get wrecked yet again on these plate tracks. That's why Mark has so many fans and Jimmie well not so much.

I love my 48 team and Jimmy! Im just saying yeah they raced smart i guess. But it did bother me to not see him running front of the pack if he could have. The wrecks rarely happen in the top five of the pack.I want him to be considered the greatest driver of all time, and yet I may be wrong but the King or Dale Sr. never used this strategy. I still love you J.J. but........race em baby!!

Timmytoad, the difference is that Mark needed to be agressive, he needs to make up points.

Jimmie48, it isn't hard to understand. What JJ did today was phone it in. Not by any stretch of the imagination can you call what he did today racing. Morgan Freeman was more aggressive on Driving Miss Daisy then your man Johnson was today. If this is how he wants to win the championship then so be it. I will have more respect for the other 11 chasers for actually trying to win races.

Yes, I am a Junior fan, No I don't hate JJ. Brilliant call by Chad. Pi$$ poor racing by JJ. He is scared of Dega, you could see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice. (he may have even said so) Chad knew exactly what he was doing. He had all the faith in the car, not so much in the driver. ..

Rained out qualifying, first pit stall, missing the wrecks. I swear the man must have taken a contract out with the devil himself.

Hey, Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart hung out in the back with Johnson until like 26 laps to go. And look what happened to them. Don't see any of you calling them cowards. They were like Johnson, hanging back letting the stuff happen in front them. Johnson had a plan, to hang out in the back until it was time to go and move forward. He wasn't really moving up much, then Newman's accident happened, then lots of cars in front of him ran out of gas or needed to pit, that moved him closer, and then that other accident happened RIGHT behind him, and he got a top 10. And FYI...Carl Edwards did that in the spring race too. Hung out in the back and when it was time to go, he went. I call that, playing it safe. But then again I've seen accidents at the front, in the middle and the back at Talladega before.

I truly love it. All the 48 haters whining and complaining that all the 48 did was ride around in the back all day. A better plan would have been to run up front and get wrecked. That would have made all of yous very happy, then you all would have wrote how stupid he was. So the guy can't win with all you haters. Take heart all you 48 haters. The season is drawing to a close. Your nightmare is over..... until next year when the 48 team does it again. A word of advice. If you don't like the 48, better get a new sport to watch cause thankfully he's not going away anytime soon.

Agree with #20, the haters will never give Jimmie credit for anything.

If he wins, he's a cheat, if he comes home 2nd (like last week), he's a loser.

And he only wins championships because of the Chase, forgot that. You might want to ask yourself why your favorite guy isn't able to beat him if he's a coward and a loser. Ahh I forgot, because he cheats...I guess that means the other teams are too stupid to cheat then...

I hope Jimmie's laughing all the way to the bank. you people just can't stand it. what do you want him to do when his own teammates said prior to the race that they wouldn't help him. so much for the hendrick motto 'everyone helps everyone else'. i call it poor sportsmanship and can't help remembering the old saying 'what goes around, comes around'. maybe jeff and mark should have stuck with jimmie like true teammates. might have saved their day. look at busch and almirola in the truck race. jimmie knew before the race he couldn't count on his teammates. you do what you gotta do and jimmie showed that. and i agree with the question....why is jimmie the only one that hung out in the back for most of the race a pansy? he wasn't alone and it happens at every dega race so in all fairness, there are a lot of pansies out there if that's the way you want to look at it.

Calm down fellow 48 fans; let them all whine. They are just disappointed that Jimmie didn't get wrecked and maybe remotely give their driver a chance at the Championship. Had their driver (whichever it may be) been the one to play it smart and stay out of trouble they'd be singing a different tune. Dale Jarrett used to hang out in the back until the end all the time. Ryan and Tony did it yesterday too; ran with Jimmie most of the day; Chad urged Jimmie to wait when Tony and Ryan finally went. Jamie who won the race was back there too a good part of the day. Had Tony not gotten caught up in the wreck with Ryan and won the race would fans be saying he was a pansy or coward? Nope. Jimmie was dead on right when he worried about the points lead he and the team worked to build being wiped out in a wreck at 'Dega and so ran a smart race. Would I rather see him going for the win ... sure but he didn't put 'Dega 4th race from the end in the Chase... Nascar did so I'd rather see him race smart in this one and win his 4th title than wreck out and blow all the previous work in one race.

GO JIMMIE, CHAD AND TEAM 48!!!! SEE YA IN CHAMPIONS VICTORY LANE AGAIN THIS YEAR!!!

points racing is what it is...i remember Alan Kulwicki doing that...plus why didn't some of the cars come in a top off when they knew they were going to run out...think it was Evernham who said it gave JJ 12 positions....

Jamie McMurray hung out in the back all day and won the race. I don't understand what's not to like about Jimmy. He's a great driver who knows how to win. And he isn't an idiot. Do you hate him because he wins all the time? Isn't that supposed to be a reason to go for someone? Because he wins all the time. I liked DJ until he retired. I had to go for someone else. I looked around and Jimmy was winning all the time. If you can't beat him (and you can't) why not join him? So I did.

Let's see a few years ago Matt Kenseth won only 1 race, but just hung around the top 10 to 15 and won the championship. What is the difference? GO JIMMIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Number 30.... I know Jimmie probably does have some bandwagon fans but also know there are A LOT of us that were fans of his when the media, other teams, and fans were wondering if Jeff and Rick had lost their minds choosing Jimmie for the 48 car. We've watched Jimmie, Chad, Ron and those guys learn and grow this team together into the best team in Nascar today and are and will be watching proudly when they complete this run for their history making 4th Championship.

I'd have to say this was a script taken right from wrestling. Totally a phony race. Come on, Johnson hanging back like he did when he could of went to the front anytime ??? Right..

This was NASCRAP's orders to try and drum up interests by having a car other than Hendrick up front..

I don't buy it...There were plenty of empty seats and TV audience was down even for Talladega. That must be a first...

Could it be the fans are tired of the Hendrick domination with Jr. left out ?

The problem is nobody wants to keep seeing the same old same old. They want to see drivers who will do ANYTHING to win a race. There should be more Brad K's is sprint cup and maybe fan's will come back to the stands and tv's.

True teammates, Jimmie doesn't know the meaning of the word. Jeff & Mark like Jimmie are out for a champioship, why should they have to help Jimmie, Chad does it for him by cheating yes cheating folks. & of Jimmies wins including Dover twice Jimmie's team has been caught cheating . I dont see Chad sharing his information like any good teammate should. If he did the 24 & 5 would be runnig just as stellar as the 48. You can call the 48 haters whiners, but it has turned into the Jimmie Johnson Show the last 4 years now there are 42 other drivers out there racing just as hard. The media is so far up his but its crazy, noone else can doing anything there is no better crew chief then Chad. Thats true I dont think anyone has been caught cheating as many times as Chad either. Jimmie is afraid of Talladega, if thats the case maybe he shouldn't race.

Actually I don’t have a problem with Jimmie hanging out in the back to escape a big catastrophe. If there hadn’t been two accidents in the last few laps, then it would NOT have worked out for him… They took a gamble and it paid off. It’s the #48’s game and strategy to play and win the championship … Jimmie really makes a terrific champion for NASCAR whether he's your choice or not. What’s not to like ?

I am not a Jimmy Johnson fan and if I was I would have been embarrassed by the way he ran at Talladega. He drove like a little girl, afraid at the back of the pack, instead of driving like a champion at the front of the pack. He drove like he was just trying to get by instead of trying to win! What a champion!
