Jeremy Mayfield hopes to race with his Mayfield Motorsports team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway.

NASCAR Scene
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Reinstated driver/owner Jeremy Mayfield hopes that his Mayfield Motorsports Inc. team can find the funding to go to the NASCAR Sprint Cup race next week at Chicagoland Speedway.
Mayfield and his wife, Shana, released a statement Saturday indicating that they tried to make the race this weekend at Daytona International Speedway but weren't able to prepare a car, assemble a team and secure sponsorship. Practice was Thursday, a day after U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen issued a preliminary injunction to lift Mayfield’s suspension for what NASCAR says was a May 1 positive test for methamphetamines.
“I want to thank all of you who have supported us,” Mayfield said in the statement. “To say that the last two months have been two of the worst months of my entire life is an understatement. The only event I can think of that brought me even greater pain was the loss of my father in 2007.”
Mayfield, who qualified for five of the first 11 races this season after starting his own team and has 433 career Sprint Cup starts, contends the drug test findings resulted from a combination of prescription drug Adderall, which is used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and over-the-counter Claritin-D allergy medicine.
NASCAR and its drug-testing supervisor, Dr. David Black of Aegis Laboratories, dispute that claim.
Mullen lifted the suspension of Mayfield, who also claims that NASCAR must follow drug-testing guidelines for federal agencies, because Mullen deemed that Mayfield has a good chance of winning his lawsuit against NASCAR and that no amount of money could compensate for his suspension if he wins the lawsuit.
Although in his motion for the preliminary injunction Mayfield stated that he planned to qualify for the race at Daytona, Mayfield couldn’t turn those plans into reality. He said in an affidavit that he has laid off 10 employees and has had to sell personal assets and borrow funds from family members in order to meet living expenses. Mayfield Motorsports also is the defendant in a lawsuit by two companies over claims of $86,304 in unpaid bills for parts, chassis and other work.
“Our hope was to bring our team to Daytona this weekend to qualify and race in the Coke Zero 400,” Mayfield said. “For those who know me well, there is nothing in the world that I would rather do than race for you all on the Fourth of July. Following Judge Mullen’s ruling, we had less than 24 hours to prepare the car, assemble a team, get sponsorship and travel to Daytona.
“Ultimately, we were unable to get this done in time.”
The Mayfields considered coming to Daytona to meet with fans and friends but opted against it.
“We’ve decided that our time is best spent back here in North Carolina working around the clock to try and secure the funding needed to get the [No.] 41 car to Chicago and beyond,” Mayfield said.
“Shana and I as well as everyone at Mayfield Motorsports will do everything in our power to race next weekend. … This weekend shouldn’t be about a questionable drug test or a flawed drug testing system. It should be about celebrating our country, the greatest country in the world.”
Mayfield was the first driver suspended under NASCAR’s new random drug-testing policy implemented this year.

Jul 4, 2009 at 6:31 PMMayfield's statement sounds eerily similar to the OJ Simpson 1993 Suicide Letter. A lot of denial, remorse, regret, and sympathy. Where's Robert Kardashian and Allen Cowlings when you need them in parallel timing like this.

Jul 4, 2009 at 10:34 PMHow does this sound anything like a suicide letter? Mayfield getting to Daytona this weekend was almost impossible anyway given the time he had to get everything ready. His statements are just the honest truth from a guy who's had to endure a ton of hardships recently. Getting to Daytona was unlikely anyway, so waiting until Chicago to go to the track makes more sense than trying to rush to Daytona, where making the race is at best a crapshoot. Plus, he wouldn't have gotten in anyway based off the rainout, so it would have just been a waste of money.

Jul 5, 2009 at 11:57 AMSince NA$CAR doesn't have "police" powers, Mr. Mayfield had little choice but to go to the press to try and establish his innocence. I haven't seen that he is suing anyone. He only went to court to get an injunction that allows him to race until this ridiculous mess gets sorted out. Whatever happened to innocent until PROVEN guilty?

Jul 5, 2009 at 1:12 PMWell, number 7, about HALF of the people on this group are simply vigilantes. I wonder how THEY would react IF and when they were in Jeremy's shoes. Course they probably could never, ever begin to fill his shoes to begin with. They simply aren't racers in the true sense. Jeremy is. I never used to care too much for Mayfield, but I am liking him more and more this year. - - - I for one hope he hangs NASCAR and the bigwigs that think THEY are so godlike and can dictate EVERYTHING that goes on. I have been sick of their attitude for a real long time.

Jul 5, 2009 at 3:19 PMPee Wee, whoa there little man. Why shouldn't someone who owns a company be able to manage it as they see fit ?? IF they don't want drugs in their sport, then they should be able to just kick the SOB's out that have to take them. It shouldn’t matter if they are prescribed or not. NO DRUGS mean NO DRUGS… Read the lips of NASCAR, little man.. N.O. D.R.U.G.S !!! PLUS, why do teams bring back-up cars ??? IN CASE THEY ARE NEEDED FOR THE RACE, RIGHT ? Jeremy could have assumed that he would have been cleared for the race and had at least one car prepared. Oh wait, he has too many lawsuits against him and had to borrow money from family members to meet his living expenses, didn’t he… So, he just didn’t have the beans to prepare a car let alone not have enough time because he didn’t do a thing about getting it ready. I doubt he will have a well prepared car for Chicago … IF he has to borrow money to live on now, where is he going to get funding to build a car ?? Wait a minute… you want me to believe there are sponsors just waiting to jump on that loser cruiser, right ! Okay… we’ll see. Maybe his hauler will have another flat on the way..

Jul 5, 2009 at 7:21 PMWell, big boy #13, IF you have been paying any attention at all, you would realize that NASCAR does NOT say NO drugs period. ONLY certain drugs for certain people. ALSO IF you were paying attention or actually KNEW ANYTHING about racing and/or cars, you would know that there WILL be sponsors clamoring to get on his car. After all, WHO has more press now than Jeremy? NO ONE. Certainly not Jr. Not even Kyle B. Who knows, maybe Drug Free America will advertise on it. Yuk, yuk. Or is that LOL? - - - Let's face it, you don't have a leg to stand on, nor does NAStyCAR. You saw what happened to their parent company, GM, or maybe you didn't and you still have your head in the sand. - - - Oh, well, that's what I get for sparring with a loser, 12 year old wannabe.

Jul 5, 2009 at 7:31 PMWerner, yes he owes 86 thousand, but that is a mere pittance as far as Cup cars go. He can make that up in two or three races just starting and parking. Course NASCAR doesn't like him, so they will probably change the rules for that now too. He was a miracle early in the season, so will be interesting to see how it goes now. We can ALL be sure, whether some want it or not, that NASCAR AND Jeremy Mayfield will be watched like a Hawk the rest of the season. By the Media, the Fans, AND drivers and crews. Maybe even Big Brother.

Jul 6, 2009 at 10:35 AMI hope the drivers send a clear signal against Mayfield. Something like not being on the track during practice while he is on the track. Where there was a false positive for meth, he broke the drug rules by not telling NASCAR about the drugs he was taking. I know Carl Edwards have let NASCAR know everything he takes and go approval to continue taking them.
