Jeff Gordon will sport a new look on his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet for the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.

The four-time Cup champion unveiled a 2009 "FireStorm" paint scheme on Thursday morning that  will debut on his No. 24 car during Daytona Speedweeks in February.

Gordon, Hendrick Motorsports and primary sponsor DuPont are the longest active driver-team-sponsor combination in NASCAR. The 2009 campaign will mark their 17th season together.

The new primary paint scheme will be the third Gordon has used on his Cup car designed by noted motorsports artist Sam Bass.

"I'm fired up about our new paint scheme," said Gordon, who formally unveiled his new colors as a guest on "The Today Show" on NBC. "I've always loved cars with flames, and the current 'Fire and Flames' paint scheme has been one of my favorites. But now I think we've improved upon that with the 'FireStorm' design, and hopefully we'll be as fast on the track as the paint scheme makes us look."

Gordon's car last took on a new paint scheme in 2001, when the “Fire and Flames” design replaced the “Rainbow Warrior” scheme with which Gordon raced beginning in his rookie season of 1993 and drove to three of his four Cup championships.

As with previous designs, the new one won't just be on Gordon's car. It will be featured on his firesuit, the uniforms of all crew members and the team's equipment.

Bass has also created a new "DuPont Motorsports" logo.

"I knew the 2009 'FireStorm' paint scheme needed to be special," Bass said. "Utilizing DuPont's state-of-the-art mixtures developed specifically for this project, the idea was to present a classic, yet contemporary look to the car."

What a disappointment! I thought he was making a significant change, but this is barely a change at all.. Fire the graphic designer for HMS!

Listen who cares about the paint scheme. Like the driver should not matter what the car looks like. Jeff must like it I am sure he had his input into it. if you dont like it then dont watch the races.

I like the look of the car, but agree there isn't much of a change - doesn't seem like something worth announcing on national tv...well maybe on Trackside!

It looks okay. I don't think it will exactly be changing anyone's opinion of what they think the 24 car looks like :-/ Hopefully Jeff Gordon can get back to his winning ways next year...I may not be a real fan of his, but it just doesn't seem right when he's not winning at least a race or two in a season :-/

I think the new paint scheme is great!!! Too bad the first comments were so negative. Seems like some people can't wait to express their criticism.

Maybe they should let the fans vote on which paint scheme is best. My vote would be to bring back the Rainbow Warrior scheme. This new scheme is just that a scheme. Don't know where they come up with Firestorm? Guess it's the yellow? yuk

Yeah I suppose the difference is the gradient yellow-to-red...I mean, it looks cool, but I don't think it's Earth-shatteringly different. Is the DuPont hood logo different? I can't tell...

I am yet to see anything that says "wow" to me. It's a yellow splitter (how many of them do we need in Cup?) and then it progresses to the red flames. The only major change is that it now has a black base instead of blue. It's not much of a change, especially for the hype...

I saw the car this morning on The Today Show and thought it was magnificent… Just beautiful.. There are too many red cars on the track and that yellow nose won’t be missed. You can’t please everyone.. I don't understand why people just can't keep their ugliness to themselves. If you don’t like what you see, look the other way… GO JEFF !! Win one for us !!

Some people are just unhappy Tom. It is sad that they can only express it in this way. I think it's just part of bearing one another's burdens. I doesn't look very different, but I always like the old look-a-like better than what's being replaced. Great advertising for the paint.

Wake up folks, Jeff could care less about this new paint job except for the fact he'll receive more royality money from all his die-hard fans who will have to have a die-cast of his new paint job.

Na, I think he actually does care about his fan base. He seams to be down to earth and a generally nice guy. Of course he's into make money, he's not stupid.

Looks good, not as drastic a change from Rainbow Warrior look to Fire and Flames. Actually I think he should have changed to car with paint scheme from Oct 07 Talladega win, that was designed in a contest I believe. That car was cool and I thought it was easy to spot from the stands, even high up where we sat. Hey, at least he didn't do 2 different schemes at same time like Jr. Now that cost a lot!

Looks real good. Those that don't like the new paint scheme are not Jeff Gordon Fans. The yellow splitter in the front will stand out and that car will look great at night races.

I think the new car looks great. I've liked all his paint schemes--the rainbow and flames. I think Sam Bass did a super job and should be commended. Jeff is the greatest driver there is and he deserves a great paint scheme. I like that fact that he doesn't change it often and he becomes know by his scheme. We need a change. The new car's paint will be all he needs to win it all next year. Go team 24. I don't know why so many are negative about the new car--it's going to create a firestorm.

Honestly, I expected a lot more black with red/orange/yellow flaming. Something about a mostly black car with flames - sort of says "I'm serious, I'm tough, forget last year - I am here to kick your a..!" But, as long as he is happy I guess. More important maybe is finding setups for the new car he can win with.

if he wins, what the heck does it matter? honestly, i think the fully red hood wasnt the best idea,(they shouldve kept the flames on it) but i dont care, ill be a fan, til he retires.
