COMMENTARY

An open letter to Kyle Busch:

Dear Kyle,

Hey man. Tough weekend, huh? You dominated the Nationwide Series race at Darlington but lost it on an unlucky flat tire, then slammed the wall in the Sprint Cup race and finished many laps down.

Well, you know what they say: You can’t win ‘em all.

On second thought, maybe you’ve never heard that expression before. You certainly don’t act as if you have.

After the Nationwide race, you did that thing where you scowl and walk really fast and ignore reporters when they try to ask you for your reaction to what happened. You know what I’m talking about.

Then after you hit the wall in the Sprint Cup race, you refused to come out of your hauler for 45 minutes and talk to the waiting media and eventually offered just 15 words before getting back in your damaged car to finish the race.

Look, everyone knows you’re competitive and passionate about racing. And, no doubt, that fire helps you win races.

I’ve already gone on the record as saying I think you’ll eventually go down as the greatest driver in history when your career is finished. A ton of people think you have the best talent in the garage.

But you have become by far the worst loser in NASCAR. It’s no wonder fans have such a hard time rooting for you.

See, here’s the thing: When you win, you show a great deal of personality. You can be funny, engaging, interesting and entertaining. And you win so often, you’d think that you would learn how to take the bad times with the good times.

The problem is, there’s no in-between with you. If you don’t win, you often act like a child who didn’t get his way. People don’t like that, Kyle.

I heard your apologist Darrell Waltrip say the other day that you like winning more than anyone and hate losing more than anyone.

Uh, no. That’s pretty silly, actually. Other drivers despise losing, too. But most of them act like men and face the music when they have bad days.

We all have bad days, Kyle, but that doesn’t give us a license to behave badly. I don’t know if you realize this, but outside of the racing world, a lot of people – many NASCAR fans – have very difficult, high-stress jobs in which every day is not a victory. But that’s life – you have to go through adversity and learn how to deal with the down times.

And, dude, your down times aren’t even that bad. You storm off and refuse to talk when you have a bad finish, but at the end of the day you still fly home on a private jet to your lakeside mansion filled with expensive toys. How about a reality check?

Look, it might be understandable if you acted poorly after enduring weeks of frustration or something like that. But when you sweep the weekend at Richmond and then act as if it’s the end of the world because you didn’t win the very next week, that’s a problem.

Maybe you have too many enablers around you, Kyle. People let you get away with your bad behavior and don’t call you out on it or make you take responsibility for your actions. They make excuses for you and say, “Well, that’s just Kyle.”

I’m sure that makes things easier for you, because you never have to apologize and are allowed to just move on as if nothing ever happened. But Kyle, it sure doesn’t win you many friends. And the sad thing is, I think there are a lot of fans who actually want to like you. You just turn them off by being such a sour jerk.

What’s amazing about this whole thing is you could easily start to change your image by taking 30 seconds, answering two questions from reporters about what happened in the race – thereby sending a message to both the media and fans that you’re capable of dealing with defeat. It might require a deep breath and some self-discipline, but it’s not as if people are asking you to stand on the front lines in Afghanistan or anything.

I know there are good people giving you advice, the ones who understand how much you continually damage your image. Do yourself a favor and listen to them, Kyle. And aside from just your popularity, it wouldn’t hurt to try and be a better person in general.

Sincerely,

Jeff Gluck

Oh please, Gluck. You and the whole rest of the whining media are getting played like fiddle. Look, we had Martin win, we had Logano and Keselowski do great, you have Mayfield busted for a positive test, and who are you talking about? The guy who finished 30-something! It's a wonderful act designed to KEEP him the meost talked about driver in NASCAR. You all just keep on playing right into his hands...

I rather enjoy someone being true to themselevs and showing their true feelings. You media type are all up in arms because he does not need you. You want to talk about big egos you have to look no further than almost any reporter you think you have the right to stick a mic or recorder in someones face anytime you like. If they choose not to talk to you well then something must be wrong with them becasue you are the all powerfull media and you can do no wrong. Get over yourself if I had a crappy day I would not want to talk to you either and answer the same stupid question over and over again. He will one day talk to you again until then find something else to report on. BTW he is my favorite driver and I would really like to hear from him what happens but if he chooses not to tell us then so be it. I have lots of other stuff to read.
    GO BUSCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have a problem with how Kyle treats the media. They are going to be right in the drivers face asking stupid questions and then print what they want anyway. Even if they have to read between the lines. Sometimes I wish Jr would tell them where to go. My problem with Kyle is the way he disrespects the fans. Even if the fans are booing they should still be treated with respect. You never saw Sr or Gordon act like Kyle and they both heard plenty of booing.

I am sick of everyone complaining about drivers being too sanitized, too PC, and too robotic out of one side of their mouths and then complaining that Shrub should act more like the other drivers out of the other side. Really?? He should give the old "we had a good car, that was some bad luck, we'll get 'em next week" speech? That is the LAST thing NASCAR needs. He is displaying the raw emotion that everyone says NASCAR doesn't have anymore. Make up your minds what you want.

His fellow is a hard guy to figure out. Obviously he's one of the best around and has many more years to only get better, but his attitude at times is puzzling. NASCAR needs to impose a "cooling off" period after a race, then make the drivers accessible to the media.

Kyle is a sore loser...I agree...but the worst loser in NASCAR?! Maybe right now but has he ever punched a media person like Tony did a few years ago? I don't think so. Anyway Tony grew up and learned how to deal with it better and I believe that Kyle will too. But I'm like #11...let them show some personality, no matter whether you like what they show or not. I'm tired of the same old boring, P.C. answers some of the other drivers give. Give me Kyle & Tony's fire over Jimmie & Jeff's "vanilla" personalities any day.

#9 Gladly, the in your face attitude when he wins. He is not happy to just do a bow or burnout. He stops eggs the fans on with his counting off his wins while they boo. His remarks in press conferences that he doesn't need fans and doesn't want to be popular. The way he talks about and makes fun of other drivers, especially Hendrick drivers. His knocking people out of the way and then if there's crash,it's never his fault. If someone gets into him it's the end of the world.

Oh c'mon people and Jeff. Take a chill pill. I don't like Kyle Busch at all but am dang happy he is the way he is. In fact, we don't have enough drivers with some character flaws and outlandish personality.
We need more guys like Kurt and Kyle and my favorite ex-driver Jimmy Spencer. Ratings are down and while not the main reason, one problem is the polite "cookie cutter" personalties.
They don't all have be wild ones but we need more than just a couple. I love seeing Kyle storm off in a huff. Most media members, I suspect, are just looking for some inflammatory comments anyway.

When Kyle causes a crash, he refuses to take responsibility. When his car isn't up to snuff, he hides in his hauler or stomps (or runs) off to hide in his fancy motorhome. People talk about his fantastic car control; if he has such great car control why does he run into other cars and cause them to crash?

It is tiresome to hear or read so many members of the media singing his praises and telling us how wonderful he is. Ok, you said once that you think he is a great driver. Enough already.

That said, Please, no more articles about him until he behaves as an adult, not a childish, churlish baby.

Kyle's name in the subject line gets attention from readers; I won't be reading any more of them - even those written by my favorite authors.

Has anybody ever watched “Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel and noticed those little parasite fish that stick up against the body of the big shark?.. You know….the ones that just hitch a ride waiting for the shark to make a kill….. And then they scurry around feeding off of the gnawed up left-over bits that float by…… and then go right back to hitching a ride on the shark????? Anyway….. What if one day one of those parasite fish wrote a melodramatic “open letter” just dripping with SELF_RIGHTEOUSNESS telling the shark “to be a better person”??????? That’d be pretty FUNNY wouldn't it??!!! Anyway, I am so THANKFUL that Kyle Busch is in this sport!!!! Articles like this are a GOOD sign folks!!!!!! We should be CELEBRATING!!!! I see this as a sign of HOPE…a healthy side-affect…… meaning that the politically-correct robots who share Gluck’s passion for all things PHONY and FAKE are starting to lose their bland grip on our sport! The damage they have inflicted could FINALLY be starting to heal!!! Of course, they don’t like it, but that just makes it EVEN better!!! THANK YOU KYLE BUSCH!!!!!!!!!!

    Jr Fan Carol,

That is his "thing" just as Carl does a back flip he bows and he counted off victories one time. BTW it’s called a personality I know your driver does not have one and it is hard to recall what he does when he wins it has been so long ago. He is honest he does not want to be the most popular he wants the most wins a title much better than Most Popular. I have never heard him "make fun" of anyone he gets a good jab in at JR every so often but if I recall Jeff Gordon called him the best he has seen in a long time. When is the last time he wrecked someone that argument is getting VERY VERY old. Just admit he is better than your boy and that just IRKES you but us Bush fans love it.

Just what the world needs--yet another writer who thinks that people in the public eye (or at least NASCAR drivers) OWE the media a good sound bite, come hell or high water. Worse yet, another writer who seems to believe that Kyle should change his behavior to fit anybody else's expectations.

Worse yet, all last year people moaned incessantly about how bad an interview Kyle would give after a hard loss or accident, but the media showed it again and again anyways. Now everybody's moaning because he doesn't give the media the pleasure of expressing his frustration in sound bites they can show repeatedly while crowing about what a sore loser he is.

To be honest, I think people many in the media are upset because Kyle has learned that talking to them right after a bad incident only ends up giving them more fuel for the fire most of them would love to see his popularity burn in; so now they have to go and start a new fire--"he doesn't talk to us enough when he loses."

You can't have it both ways guys. Now the media just has to show him running off the track or throwing his helmet in gloves into his car or truck over and over. And although it's fun to watch once or twice, it's not quite as good as a really harsh statement about another driver or a "Duh!" in response to a vapid question from a media talking head.

Finally, nowhere does it say that athletes can't be "sore losers." If I were involved in activities even one-tenth as stressful as NASCAR and that I liked one-tenth as much as Kyle likes racing, you wouldn't want to be anywhere near me after a particularly tough incident that cost me a win. Wasn't it Vince Lombardi who said, "Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser."

Kyle, keep being a bad loser because if you ever get comfortable with losing, it will only begin to happen more and more often...

One more thing, to his fans, Kyle doesn't need to change his image. Do you realize that according to a statistic repeated a few weeks back on a pre-race broadcast that Kyle's merchandising sales have skyrocketed (by some accounts over 600% in the last year), while sales for nearly every other driver have declined? Kyle's image is just fine with this fan and many others, thank you very much.

And finally, you close the letter with "it wouldn’t hurt to try and be a better person in general." Who are you to judge him or anybody else? Do you know the work he does personally within the community (particularly in his home town of Vegas) or that his foundation does with children across the country? Do you know what he's like with his friends and loved ones? Do you know anything more than what you are fed by the media, which either worship or despise him --depending upon which might get more viewers/readers each week?

My bet is that he does far more with one appearance at a children's hospital or school with or without a checkbook in his hand than all the good all your articles put together will ever do. The arrogance you show in presuming to tell anyone else to "be a better person in general" is astounding.

WOW! It couldn't be put any better! I desparately tried to like Kyle thinking he just had to be a better person than his brother Kurt. Then he starts to win everything and acts like a baby when he doesn't win. NASACAR wonders why their TV ratings are down? I for one, when watching races and Kyle gets the lead and is holding it, switch channels. I missed both races and Richmond last weekend due to family issues. When I check the web, I saw that he had owon both, so i figured I didn't miss anything.

While I am not a fan of Kyle's I gotta admit I agree with some of the things that Rowdy Fan said. The media as a whole have got to be the most frustrating part of a driver's life. Some of the DUMBEST questions I have ever heard asked have come from these so-called "experts". I remember a few years back (can't remember if it was at Martinsville or where) when that chunk of the racetrack came flying out and hit Gordon's car. That genius Dick Bergren asked Dale Jr. "What does it look like out there, Junior?" HELLO...it looks like a hole! And while I would love to slam Kyle on this, I gotta admit that I like his little temper tantrums. They give me something to smile about. LOL ;)

I have to say that I love it when Kyle Busch runs away and the cameras are following him. He doesn't have to say anything because his expressions say it all! I laugh until my sides hurt because it is so funny!! But look at it from another stand point...I wonder what his sponsers must think? Kyle dominated the race in Nationwide and didn't even stop to thank his sponsers who are the reason he is racing anyway! If I were a sponser I don't believe I would like this to much. Kyle might win a lot of races but he will lose more than he wins! Keep walking/running away Kyle. Please don't stop doing that!!!! A lot of us love it!!! Darell Waltrip has you covered when you do so don't worry about that! And when you win makue sure you laugh so hard that we can see every tooth in your head, like the picture we saw of you at your last win!!!! I will not call you any names, however I will state my opinion!!

I like Busch because he won't suck up to the TV and press. He doesn't owe them anything. I get so tired of the corporate pretty boy racers and their scripted answers. You know what they are going to say before they say it, so why ask? They sound like they are reading from a teleprompter. I want a true racer who doesn't care what other people like. That's a lot like the early Earnhardt the elder.

I enjoy the "frustrations" that drivers show from time to time, but Kyle Busch isn't even worthy to represent what Nascar says they are all about. Don't compare Tony Stewart "punching" someone with the continual hateful, disgusting attitude that Busch and his ego display. At least Stewart talked about it. I don't understand why the "religious" Gibbs wants to be represtented by a driver, no matter how good, like Kyle Busch. He is totally unable to relate to the fans of Nascar, has an ego that is beyond understanding, has no clue what it's like in the "real world", is disrespectful to fans by his display of rudeness, does not portray what Nascar claims they want to portray, and doesn't have a genuine bone in his body, unless he is getting his way on the track and off. You say leave him alone, because he's good. He's terrific!!! Does that excuse his attitude and behavior? NOT IN MY WORLD. HE BRINGS A BAD NAME TO NASCAR AND ALL IT IS SUPPOSED TO REPRESENT.

All you media just want is that bad reaction from the drivers. Did you not learn from Earnhardt Sr or Tony Stewart not to stick a mic in their faces when they are having a bad day? So Kyle goes somewhere to chill for a few minutes and not give you that bad interview you want. What is wrong with that?

Know what else? He gets more media coverage walking to his hauler than the winner of the race gets.

Kyle is who he is. Why should he change his personality to fit some mold? He has brought the excitement back to Nascar, something that has been missing for a very long time. Even the fans who say they hate him have to admit they are watching every move he makes. He's a throwback to the DW,Earnhardt Sr, Rusty days.

    Go Kyle!

I kind of go back and forth on this myself. On one hand, sometimes when he dodges the media I don't blame him one bit. But every now and then, I wish he would just say a quick "no comment" or "OBVIOUSLY I'm not happy with the circumstances right now!" instead of running off without saying anything at all. But I sure do appreciate the fact he's honest and unscripted when he does talk.
Thank goodness the drivers aren't all alike...there's a wide mix of personalities.

Kyle Busch has no obligation to act in a manner suitable for Mr. Gluck. One day he will probably learn to be a little more engaging when he has had a bad day, but he is young and the way he handles the bad days is somewhat typical. I would probably hide too because most of the questions asked in situations like that are so obvious and the answer is equally as obvious (when a tire blows what is there to talk about?). Just because he doesn't act the way YOU want him to doesn't give you the right to schoolmarm him.

For all of you who "would be Kyle Busch fans if he wasn't such a jerk" and those who think all of his fans are jerks as well (Mr. Phillips), do you really think this is something either he or his fans care about--your fanhood and camaraderie? Kyle and his fans are doing quite well without your support, thank you very much. As a matter of fact, please never change your mind, even if Kyle does become "a better human being." As a long-time Busch brothers fan I already bear a bit of resentment towards his increasing popularity as it means that I have to wait longer in the ever-growing lines at his merchandise trailers each time I go to the track. And to be honest, anyone who would change the channel whenever Kyle is winning or who has stopped watching because of him, I'm just guessing here, but I'd say they weren't real fans of the sport to begin with. A NASCAR fan doesn't change the channel or give up on NASCAR anytime their favorite driver might end up behind the wall or out of contention, unless maybe you are one of the shallower members of Junior Nation, many of whom I have seen leave the track in droves once Junior is out of contention.

Kyle is a great driver but has no respect for the sport or the fans. The ratings are down because we are tired of Nascar letting people like him disrespect his brother, the media, nascar, the drivers and his own team. At Richmond when he was leading over half of the stands emptied with 75 laps to go. We do not need to watch him mock the fans and the sport. Great article Jeff.

I'll make it simple, if you don't like Busch or his attitude or anything else about him, simply don't listen to his many Victory Lane interviews and quit holding your breath to see what he might say when he doesn't end up there. And for God's sake please quit attempting to tell him and/or his fans how he should act if he wants the media to treat him better and if wants to have more fans--especially fans like you who him to meet your expectations of what he should act like. He needs neither. He gets more exposure than any other driver on the track, even when he has a mediocre day, and his fans are as loyal and tenacious as any others out there, bar NONE. And if you really don't like him, hit him and those that support him in the wallet--don't buy his stuff. Don't buy his T-shirts and die-casts, don't buy M&Ms, and write a letter telling Mars how their sponsorship of the No. 18 made you stop buying their products. Write your opinion pieces and make your snide comments and if you must change the channel as you can't stand to see him in the lead anymore, it's your loss. The boy is making history and I'll bet dollars to the donuts he'll be doing for years to come that many of you will look back at this time and lie through your teeth saying, "Yeah, I was there (or I saw that race) and I was pulling for him all the way..."

Wow!! Jeff Gluck sure nailed this one. We tried to like Kyle when he was with Hendrick Motorsports, but his attitude was a real turnoff. It is not easy being a perfectionist and drive a race car. It takes extra maturity to accept a second or worse place finish. Kyle is his own worst enemy. I have noticed that if Kyle does not do well in the truck and/or Nationwide race he does not do well in the same-weekend cup race. He needs to man-up and support his team, and admit that he makes mistakes, too. He is a fantastic driver, but not always a smart one. When he matures, accepts less than perfection, and learns to drive smarter, the rest of the field is going to be in trouble.

SceneDaily had a post up Saturday about Kyle Busch hopes to be a favorite to win the Southern 500. Now I just looked it back up to make sure I was right before I said this......There were 7 comments on there only one of which was for Kyle Busch! Several bashers and two wishing there Mother's Happy Mother's Day! I know no one has to comment on anything if they don't want to but it just surprised me that there were none of his fans wishing him luck or giving him words of encouragement! I know he lost the night before but I still would have thought his fans would have commented on his article. And #79, I watched that race and I did not pull for Kyle Busch nor will I ever, I don't care how much history he makes. I said earlier that I don't go into other driver's articles and bash them and I don't! This article like I said before is not a "GREAT JOB KYLE BUSCH " article. I do read articles about Kyle and other drivers and other NASCAR news. That's the way to know what is going on! Still where were all his fans that didn't comment on that article which was about the Southern 500, not about the previous nights race? Just wondering......

I don’t usually make responses to Kyle stories. On occasions when he has made digs at Jr for no apparent reason, except Jr has his ride. And, then he should be thanking Jr; it is the best thing that has happened to him in NASCAR. Anyway, I will try to be nice. I love the article just because. However, I am not that fond of the way the media handles themselves either. They can ask such dumb questions, and I don’t blame someone not wanting to give an interview. I wish Junior would put them in their place more often. I am willing to bet, though, those of you defending Kyle here today had plenty to say about Jr showing his frustration in that interview. At least Jeff picked a better pic for Kyle. I am with Gwen, I enjoy Kyle’s tantrums, as sissy as they might be. I can almost hear the door slam when he gets to the hauler. My guess is there are fans on both sides of the fence that do. Maybe for different reasons, but enjoy it just the same. I do not watch every move he makes, I never watch him when he has won a race, I don’t watch Victory Lane, and I even turn off his commercials. But in defense of the media, it is hard to phantom someone that wins as much as he does has a glass jaw. Can’t take the punches. And, the Kyle fans that say, “Just leave him alone”, would be screaming they don’t pay him enough attention. And, would be spending more time at Jrs articles complaining there is just way to much written on him. .. I have a granddaughter (age 13) that performs in piano competitions. Even though she wins quite often, I am proud if she does not win, she takes the time to congratulate the winner. I think I would be embarrassed, for her, if she stomped off in a huff…. Hmmmm, Gwen, suppose they were at Jrs articles because they find it more entertaining to harass Jr fans than to support their own driver?

Good article. Kyle might be a good wheel"boy", but good sport"man", far from it. The age bit is getting old folks, we have American Troops younger then Kyle fighting for our freedom and Kyle's to allow him the right to race and earn those big bucks and toys. Ask your sons or daughters, husbands or wives fighting! Do they hide when the going gets tough? They don't have the choice to hide in their tents if they have a bad day, they carry on as adults.
Kyle owes his sponsors to MAN UP and give interviews like it or not. That's his JOB to be visible to the fans, he doesn't care about and the media to show off those sponsors names. Otherwise no matter how good the boy is Gibbs may be paying for Kyle out of his own pocket and deserves to. You reap what you sow.

Who said we Kyle Busch fans weren't wishing Kyle well for any of his races? Just because we don't happen to read every SceneDaily article that comes out and comment on it doesn't mean we don't care. Nor does it mean we're off bashing on Junior somewhere. I happen to like Junior--he and Kurt Busch made me a fair amount of money at the sportsbooks in Vegas back when I caught NASCAR fever back in 2003-2004. And to be honest, it's not really all that much fun to kick a man while he's down, and like it or not, Junior is down. From what I've seen, it's been far more fair-weather "fans" from Junior Nation complaining about Junior's performance (or more specifically, Tony Eury Jr's performance) than any Kyle Busch fans. We've got enough to do on our own, either being ecstatic for our favorite driver or feeling bad when he doesn't do so well. And with him running two to three times a week, we've got plenty to keep our attention. As a matter of fact, I write for another site and have written articles primarily about Kyle (both good and bad), mostly about this topic--why it is that everyone feels compelled to tell Kyle he needs to grow up. In case you hadn't noticed, he doesn't need to. Worse are those who would say, "we'd be Busch fans if he wasn't such a jerk." Who needs fans like that? And I've written the occasional article aimed at those who might be kicking Junior or Tony Jr. undeservedly. I personally would like to see Junior back at his best and competing for wins rather than constantly fighting off detractors. Whether you like Junior or not, having him win or contend for wins as well as having him contend to be in the Chase is good for the sport overall. Given the size and loyalty of his fan base, it's more important than ever for the sport, especially considering the current economic climate.

A final note, Carole (post 30), if Kyle had wanted to wreck Vickers a couple weeks back, he would have wrecked him. He didn't like how Vickers was hitting his rear bumper in the corners so he pulled back, got behind Vickers, and moved him up the track to show his displeasure. It was nothing worse than what Busch did to Stewart at the end of Daytona (or what nearly every second place driver has done at the end of a restrictor-plate track)--pushing him a little bit to get him loose and up the track, but not enough to wreck him.

i am not a Kyle fan, but I too enjoy his tantrums, since they add something else to talk about after the race is over. I will have to admit that he is someday going to be a top caliber driver, hopefully he can learn to maybe cool off a bit then give some recognition to his sponsors and leave it at that. No one likes to talk right away if you have a bad day, but some cooling off time would help, for the sponsors sake.

I like how the SAME group of people who boo Kyle AND HIS MOTHER at intros before the mother's day race every year...... and who yell their embarassing profanity-laced threats and insults....... holding up their one-finger salutes......and who toss their beer cans on the track...... and who make fun of the man's ears..... and on and on and on..... I like how it's these SAME people that are suddenly EXPERTS on etiquette and the PROPER and respectable way that a man should carry himself!!!! What a joke!!!! I even saw one classy fan pour beer all over Kyle through the fence when he went to pick up the checkers from the flag man at Darlington. And Kyle played along and took it in stride begging the fan for more! So tell me......... Why is it that so many of you who demand certain behavior from a driver DON'T SEEM TO DEMAND IT FROM YOURSELVES?????? And if you aren't one of the thugs doing these things, how do you feel about those that do? Where is your outrage?

Honestly Jeff, you don't think Kyle's going to read about how you feel about his attitude do you? All he's going to do is ask how many responses were made on the article. Maybe not even that. It's a job. That's it, a job. He's not interested in how anyone feels about him and why should he. He only gets paid millions for going fast in cars that people put their hearts and souls into. He only has fans that want to believe that he really cares how they stick up for him. Yeah, he wins and wins, but if that's the thanks that the fans get, It's an empty victory. So yeah, Jeff you've got a letter that is open, and the only ones reading it are the ones here at home like me. Kyle's home sleeping on his bank roll.

Very, very well said. I hope you sent a copy directly to Kyle and to JD and the Coach. Someone needs to have the guts to say these things to his face. Instead of trying to make us like him by saying how good a driver he is, and how kind and generous he is to people like Sam Ard and various children's charities, they should be telling him to grow up and act like a man. Hasn't he ever heard of good sportsmanship? I know he and Kurt were raised to believe that winning is everything and losing is for the little people, but he needs a major reality check. He's not 18, he's twenty-four, but Joey Logano has more maturity and poise than Kyle, and Kyle has been in NASCAR for six years now. Time to stop making excuses for him and call him to account for his behavior. Call it what it is: the words and actions of a thoroughly spoiled child. He'll never win true fans that way. Too bad, because the kid can drive.

I do think he is a great talent though. Problem is that he hurts the sport by being so cavalier. I realize that there's no set of rules on how different personalities react to different situations but, come on, at least recognize that the rest of the world supports your lifestyle. You aren't the one that spends the money for all those hats, coats, shirts, die-cast cars, tickets, and motorhome weekend camping packages. Second place should be worth more than 10 seconds of pizzed off attitude. He is good though!

Well Trisha, I'm sure that we'll be razzed on our out of date thinking. It seems that goodness is a past expression anymore. Being rude, crude, and of a spoiled brood seems to be acceptable in these new times. I'll always love racing and I love to win just like anyone else. I just think, that just being able to compete at that level should be something that should be considered an honor, not a right. I agree, Joey Logano shows that being young and having respect in the same sentence can still be a part of life. He shows that coming of age is a learned process and a valued one. Of course, it seems that he has very strong family values too. That has a lot to do with the way one carries ones self.

I want my driver to want to WIN and hate to lose. These fans that talk about what a "jerk" he is love to boo, throw stuff at the track and post about how they wish he would crash. Hmmmmm, sounds like "jerks" to me. LOL Hate on Kyle bashers, it's funny to see and has NO bearing on whether Kyle has fans or not.

somewhere many who have commented on here have confused what fans want in their favorite drivers (or celebrities in general) with what they want in their day-to-day lives. i may like kyle's "love to win, hate to lose" attitude when it comes to watching my favorite sport, but that's not how i live my life or expect the average person to behave. it's not even how i expect kyle to behave when he's away from the track--and from what i've seen, he doesn't. all things must be taken in context. if i had children and one of them acted as kyle does after losing a game of checkers, that's one thing. but to pretend that i should be the one to tell kyle how to act after being wrecked or after a tough loss when a reporter sticks a microphone in his face and asks a stupid question is condescending and presumptuous at the very least. personally, i don't want to see some saccharine set of responses to the same old questions after someone loses a close race because of stupid mistake by him, by another driver, by his team, or by NASCAR. i expect someone who is playing the game at that level to have some serious "fire-in-the-belly" and when they win i want to see the joy, and when they lose i want to see the disappointment. but i can only speak for myself.

As for Gwen in Article 82, In your comment, I WAS one of the ones who did make a comment in that post. And wished a Kyle basher happy mothers day. I did not wish Rowdy well in that race prior to Mark Martin winning it, (BTW, Good Job Mark!), so yes guilty as charged. I have this serious problem, you see sometimes this thing called having a life seems to get in the way of my ability to comment on every Rowdy post. But, I was watching the race. Dear Jeff:
By a better person, did you mean that Kyle should turn into a media a-kisser and answer all the stupid questions the media constantly ask a driver after he crashes out? You know, all the questions you guys and girls ask the drivers with the obvious answers to them. I would rather he stay in his hauler and not give you guys the time of day. The day he stops being Kyle is the day I look for a new favorite driver. I applaud him for not kissing up to the media. I don't see his sponsors getting upset with his actions or his owner and those are the only people he has to answer to. He's the best thing that happened to NASCAR in a long time. In general, Jeff, he is a much better person than you'll ever be.

In Nov 2008, Jeff Gluck wrote an article called "Clint Boyer should act like a champion." It also pertained to his being immature because he didnt always talk to media during bad times. Lets start by saying, Failure to meet obligation of an accepted entry, subsection 7-2B, refers that the first 3 finishing drivers and the highest finishing rookie contender are the ones under obligation to media post race. If that rule changed, please correct me. Now, Stewart at Phx in Apr 2007, and Biffle at Indianapolis have been in violation of this rule. Has Kyle? None I am aware of. Those reporters who rush to the pit area to get a story while the driver is fired up about their teams car or the race are the last ones I would share anything with. And Gluck, since when did he become the maturity inspector. Maybe I will write him a letter.

Where is the article about Carl Edwards? or did I miss the interview that he gave while he was in the garage Saturday night? I could have sworn that I watched the entire race. Or could it be that the writer is just a little biased? The problem with Kyle Busch fans is that they are new to the sport, have no idea of the history of Nascar and think Toyota is an American car. They love the M&M car, but have no idea of what Nascar racing is all about. They get so offened by what is said and written about him. GROW UP... Dale SR wasn't a fan favorite when he started. I certainly saw beer cans thrown at Jeff Gordon at Darlington, and Talladega. What they never did was run and away from an interview.

Kyle N, Now why did you have to go and do that? #111? Why not talk about Jeff Gluck, author, or Kyle Busch, subject. Or even the acts themselves. Why did you have to go and bring Jr. into it? This Jr. fan is well aware of the results Dale Jr. has produced this year. I tried to keep it real in my comment. I did not call Kyle Busch or you names. And, to assume that if you don’t like Kyle Busch you must be a Dale Jr. fan is not logical. And it is just as illogical to think just because I am a Jr. fan is the reason I do not like Kyle. The only time that comes into play is when Kyle takes potshots at Jr. in an interview. Or maybe when he spins Jr. out in the race.

Having a unique personality is no excuse for not being a good sport. I really liked Kyle early on, but lately his baby attitude is really just annoying. Sure he shouldn't act robotic like other drivers but he should at least stop pouting like a child. If you are upset, show like a real man then Kyle!

#122 - Sorry Mr Wingert, but your theory is incorrect. I happen to be a long time NASCAR fan, over 30 years actually. I am a Kyle Busch fan and I know plenty of the history of the sport. My first favorite driver was Bobby Allison and he actually hit Cale with his fist....what do you think NASCAR's response to that would be today? I remember when they responded to Tony Stewart's interviews where he showed that he was upset over what had happened in a race. So, now drivers have to either hold in their emotions, or don't interview. It seems Kyle has decided on the don't interview option. Works for me, and I believe it works for most of his fans. What I don't understand is why so many of his "haters" want to see him interviewed. It would not bother me in the least if they didn't interview the drivers that I don't like, in fact I would welcome it! and I sure wouldn't go to an article about those drivers that I don't like and waste the time and space to tell the world that I don't like them, because no one cares whether I like a particular driver, just as no one cares who you don't like or why.

I totally agree. But I will add that he lacks an adult personality. I don't care how good a driver he may be, he is arrogant and despicable and has no respect for other people trying to do their job. It amazes me that his parents had 2 children who have not been taught to respect others, whatsoever, not even their own teams and owners. The only reason that his brother has somewhat improved on his personality is that he is being mentored by the gentleman, Roger Penske.

When KB's sponsors or team owners want him to change, then we have something to discuss here. Thankfully he is not as immature, rude and insulting as Tony S. used to be. Reporters and fans forget that the driver's are not racers to please the whims of any and every person who is hurt or sadly insulted by the non-injurious actions of someone who realistically wants to put the race behind them and move on. If KB is not in the top five or ten, let him be. How silly is it to chase an unhappy racer or camp outside his hauler? KB has proven in a very short period of time that he has what it takes to win races on all types of tracks. If a fan or reporter wants to support a racer or his sponsor, great; otherwise any writer or interviewer who whines on like this lame article professes that a racer needs to grow up or become someone other than who he is in his heart has forgotten what we are all really here to see: competitive racing. KB in no time has shown that he is not in the sport for a nation of fans; he is here to win races. How wonderful to hear him talking about having a family! As soon as he matures or becomes what everyone else wants him to be; those same clowns will write or say that they miss the good 'ol days...

Not that it would help him. He could amass 100 wins and never get a vote from me for anything. Even if he changed it won't help. I guess you have to take into consideration the mentality of the person posting how old they think he is. Now if my calculations are correct, Kyle should be an adult by the end of this comment session.

I'm glad that NASCAR has a new villain for everyone to talk about. Although most of you won't admit it, he's just like Dale Sr. was when he was starting out in the late 70's. Brash and arrogant at the beginning of his career, he had no problem with pushing someone out of the way in order to win races. When it came to the press he was just as negative at times because he had trouble dealing with the media. Dale was older than Kyle is now when he was starting out in the big leagues, and yet he acted the same way. Look back at your NASCAR history and you'll find many drivers who were the villains in their day, including a few beloved ones that are retired and now analyze races. Go ahead and cheer for whatever driver you care for, me I'll stay with shrub and bow along with him each time he wins races.

My bad, I mis-read GoogleEarth. I stand corrected.

Now substitute Darlington for Rockingham and he's still right on.

You are right #124 I am sorry! At least I have the desency to appologize for what I say, unlike Jim Baylis or Bill Thompson(may I remind you of the Jimmie Johnson says we may not be so lucky next time a car flys into the catch fence), I am still waiting on that appology for calling me stupid, and Bill for agreeing!

You hit the nail right on the head Jeff. Kyle's the biggest crybaby in the garage. He acts like a little spoiled kid who can't have his way. No wonder people don't like him. If he ever grows up and becomes a man like the rest of the garage, maybe then he will get some respect from the fans and the other drivers.

JG, I call you out when I disagree. But this is one nail, hit on the head. I maintain that both Busch brothers suffer the results of a parenting style that has proven to be less effective than some others.

Being anti-Busch, understandable. Bringing the parents of the Busch brothers into it, well thats low class. You have no idea of their upbringing, so your post, lacks any credibility.

Why compare Kyle to other drivers? He's who he is. Disprespectful, not only to fellow drivers, but to his crew, fans, media, and even himself. Does he think it's flattering being so arrogant and rude. Apparently he was never taught that in order to get respect, you have to give respect. Being a great driver is a totally different subject. My question is, why was he not so "great" driving the 5 car at Hendricks!!!!!!!!!

i truly anticipated kyle's entry into the cup series when he snubbed rousch and signed with hendrick. i know that he has great talent and passion for racing. whwas all of that when he had the opportunity in the 5 car? it just seems to me that when hendrick let him go, his attitude really started coming through and he just wanted to make sure he does better in the toyota with gibbs to rub it in rick hendricks face.

This guy is a great driver no doubt but also a punk who would spin his mother out on the way to the grocery store if she got in his way. He berates his crew then is mister nice guy when he wins. People who think this is a great trait are probably just like him.
