James Hylton will not attempt to qualify for Daytona 500; did not practice Saturday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The hauler of James Hylton was leaving Daytona International Speedway on Saturday as Hylton never got out on the track to practice.
The Carter Simo Racing driver won’t attempt to qualify for the Daytona 500 on Sunday because he never was able to get a complete lap in practice, and NASCAR typically requires a driver to complete a lap at a reasonable speed to qualify the car. The team had been working on the car for the 74-year-old driver throughout the weekend but apparently never got it to race specifications. According to the team’s Web site, Hylton was plagued by battery and carburetor problems.
Hylton’s teammate, Boris Said, was 29th in the final practice session Saturday.
With Hylton’s withdrawal, there will be 56 drivers attempting to qualify for the Daytona 500.

Feb 8, 2009 at 12:42 AMDon't worry James. You will make some races this year. It won't be long before there are races where 44 cars don't show up for the race. Keep trying, my friend

Feb 9, 2009 at 3:51 PMThank God. It is an embarrassment to NASCAR for people to hear in the news that some 74-year old man is out there "competing." Not to mention all he would do is start-and-park anyway. It's waaayyy past time to just go away, James.
Report as AbuseAnd Bob, I don't even know where to start with your comment. Joey was taken out in a wreck that was absolutely no fault of his own. He shouldn't even have been in the back of the pack; only reason he was is because the ARCA race ran so long he missed the driver's meeting. And exactly what money is he bringing to the table? Your comment is beyond ignorant.

Feb 9, 2009 at 4:41 PMNASCAR should require tests in reflexes, eye sight, and endurance. Being aware of 41 other cars on the track takes mental concentration up to 4 to 6 hours straight. He needs to be able to feather the throttle, race side by side at 180 MPH lap after lap, still be able to hit his marks in the corners, as well as go fast through them. How could Mr Hylton possibly have what it takes to race at Daytona without making a mistake and taking out half the field ??? He needs to tell us about the “fountain of youth” he has discovered.
Report as AbuseGo Joey !! You are doing great …
