JTG Daugherty crewman regrets chasing tire during Atlanta race

JTG Daugherty Racing's Jimmy Watts retrieves an errant tire from the infield grass at Atlanta Motor Speedway Sunday.

HAMPTON, Ga. – A quiet and remorseful Jimmy Watts stood outside the NASCAR hauler during the Kobalt Tools 500 to meet with NASCAR officials after he had been suspended for the remainder of the event. Watts was penalized for running onto the frontstretch grass with the race under green-flag conditions to retrieve a tire from the JTG Daugherty Racing car on lap 67.
Watts, a gas man who also works for the Charlotte Fire Department, said he has been in the sport for more than seven years and just made a mistake. NASCAR threw the caution as he chased the tire.
The tire had rolled on to the frontstretch grass when it got loose from the JTG Daugherty team of driver Marcos Ambrose and was knocked away by the Yates Racing team.
“I saw the tire going away and it was a reaction – the wrong one,” Watts said.
Watts said he “certainly did not” think that the tire would roll that far across the grass and by the time he was in the middle of it, he realized he was in a bad position.
It did make for interesting television.
“It’s not the kind I want to be part of,” Watts said.
Watts said he hoped to be back next week but was waiting to talk to NASCAR officials to see if any additional penalties would be issued.
“Maybe he’s new – maybe he hasn’t seen us drive, but we tend to wreck a lot,” Roush Fenway Racing driver Matt Kenseth said. “I wouldn’t want to be in the middle of that grass.”

Report as AbuseAnd it(the caution that he brought out) hurt a lot of guys that were pitting and that had just pitted,it put some of them a lap or more down.
And Jozef, pitstops were ongoing, they were green flag stops and not everyone had cycled through yet.

Mar 9, 2009 at 3:40 PMI think that this a case of NASCAR over reacting. Should he have ran out and got the tire the way he did? Probally not. Did it case a hazard? I do not think so. It is not like he went out there and spent several minnutes on the infield grass. He was there and gone. I agree with Todd, if you do throw a caution flag for this, how many laps do you need? I think that this is another case of NASCAR not having a clue and making it up as they go along. In my opinion NASCAR is loosing its creditability as a sanctioning body and needs to pull their heads out of their butts.

Report as AbuseWell, the first lap of yellow is to group the field. The second, cars on lead lap pit, Third, cars a lap or more down pit. Then one to go .
Unless a 'Quickie' caution is thrown, that is the minimum laps it would take for a yellow, unless all care are on the lead lap, then it could be reduced by one lap.

This punishment makes as much sense as NASCAR's and look at the interest it would draw for the remainder of the racing season.

Why a yellow flag when a driver spins doesn't touch anything or anybody, The people that should have been suspemded are the tire people, why did they let it get away? What would have happened if someone did spin into the infield, and hit the tire, I don't even like think about that. Maybe NASCAR should go back to the good old days,

Mar 9, 2009 at 5:28 PMOk, to the person who said the caution was coming out anyway, not quite true. NASCAR does a decent job of waiting for pitstops to cycle thru before throwing a debris caution if the debris is not in the racing groove. To the people who are complaining about how long the cautions last, we need that many laps to allow cars to pit and for scoring to make sure drivers are lined up the way they're supposed to be. Just be glad they figured out a decent way to award the lucky dog. I remember when that rule first went into affect, it added 2 extra laps of caution just to cycle the lucky dog around.

Mar 9, 2009 at 9:48 PMThe tire should have been left rolling. NASCAR would have waited until all the green flag pitting was complete before they had to throw a caution. A tire in the infield is no threat to anyone. But a man out there trying to retreive it is a threat to all the drivers. And the caution was thrown. NASCAR had no choice but to throw it. Anyone, at any time can spin into the infield. A tire doesn't matter. But a person does. You just can't do that.
