TNT’s coverage of Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Infineon Raceway earned a 4.0 cable rating, Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily reports.

The rating is 7.0 percent lower than the 4.3 cable rating TNT earned for the 2008 race.

This year’s race averaged 5.788 million viewers, down 3.8 percent from last year’s 6.015 million viewers.

For its first three Sprint Cup races this season, TNT is averaging a 3.9 cable rating and 5.483 million viewers, down 9.3 percent and 5.1 percent, respectively, from the 4.3 rating and 5.780 million viewers last year, the Daily reports.

And I thought that the "Double Restart Shootout Styles" would really help out!

Whoa! Whoa!! There he goes around..or something like that. The play by play group sounded something like a bunch of kids that never seen anything like this before and did not know how to react. Each telecaster is good; what happened? I don't know. NASCAR is fighting a slump in rating due the racing fan's time is being used up. Second jobs or doing their own fixer-uppers. After hearing a bunch of kids in awe of near misses or spins, I didn't want to listen any more. I'll be watching next weekend, but may need to change to MRN if the kids are let out again. We really miss Benny.

I thought it was one of the best races of the season. Commentating wasn't annoying to me at all. But then, I'm one of the few (or many, I don't know) that prefer TNT and ESPN over FOX. I literally hate the FOX broadcast team. This year was hell because I couldn't tune them (FOX) out because of the changes made to DirecTV's HotPass for 2009.

Exactly. TNT is more interested in going to commercial than telling us what is going on. Cautions come out during the commercial and we're not sure what happened or who was the Lucky Dog. They then go to another commercial saying they will let us know how they came out of the pits. But that doesn't always happen. We're told there is racing all over the track, but we don't get to see it. And when we get back from the numerous commercials, we are treated to a full screen of Sponsors, instead of what is going on on the track. And with starting times so late, everyone already found something else to do. No wonder ratings are so bad. NASCAR is catering to the media instead of the fans.

First off: What better way can you spend a race day than watch a four hour infomercial with a little racing thrown in. I get sick and tired of 2 laps of racing and then 4 laps of commercials. NASCAR's greed forces the TV broadcasting Co's. to do way too many commercials to pay for the privilege of trying to bradcast the race. It is true that the announcers are far from the best also. What I would like to know is why is ther so much P&M about the ratings dropping. The races are boreing, the COT is a lousey race car, the teams are not allowed to fix the race car, The teams get fined and docked points for some really STUPID reasons ( Carl Edwards loose oil cap ) - and other things that don't really affect the performance of the race car. I've been a fan of NASCAR since 1951 and following it pretty close for the past 10 years. I can't afford to go to the races anymore but I can't stand the lousey bradcasts either.

Yes, the Grunts coming from the booth were not professionial but remember, in California, anything goes. We really don't know what these commentators were doing. All we could hear were the verbal sounds that had nothing to do with the on-screen view. Sort of DW Style.
Yes, if we only could bring back Benny and Buddy Baker would also be welcome. Regarding the TV Ads, They have the split screen but yes, Nasczar is over selling the product.

I don't think it's Nascar racing that is losing the fans, I think it's the TV coverage itself that is losing the viewers. I guess I'm still ticked off from when they left the air too early, and I never got to see what happened to Kasey on the last few laps..........all I heard was a spin out for Kasey Kahne............
I loved Benny Parsons and I bet he is pulling his hair out up there.

IMHO ratings are down due to the 2 hr prerace show causing a later start of the race. Also the commentators stink. Start the race at noon and get the morons out of the booth.

The tnt coverage is terrible..too many commercials, too many split screens, too many zoom shots, not enough coverage for all 43 cars, ticker at top keeps cutting away before it is finished, too much talk about technical things etc...was really hard to stay tuned..my husband only watches the last 30 laps of the races...ratings are down because of the coverage not the economy..fox did a much better job..commentators were not so biased.

It's the no talent coverage out of the broadcast booth, I get tired of them trying to explain racing when most fans know more than they do. I will give an exception to Kyle Petty.

ratings were also down with FOX...so it's not a network or announcer deal...it could be that NASCAR reached it's peak...and now it's coming back to reality...

I agree with #14, Fox ratings were down. I don't care which network broadcast races, as long as D.W.,M.W. and Mac Mac aren't in the booth. I can understand the empty grandstand seats (the economy),but the tv ratings should be up. Nascar has some work to do. The old statement "build a stadium and they shall come",does't work any more.
