Six Sprint Cup drivers completed a one-day test Tuesday at Infineon Raceway in preparation for the June 22 Toyota/Save Mart 350.
The six drivers – Sam Hornish Jr., Travis Kvapil, Marcos Ambrose, J.J. Yeley, David Ragan and David Gilliland – all tested in something other than a Sprint Cup car.
NASCAR limits testing at tracks that host Cup races, but drivers can test in other vehicles. Hornish Jr., for instance, drove one of Penske Racing’s Nationwide Series Dodges.
“I’ve driven around this track before, but I’ve never seen this track configuration, so it’s different,” Hornish said. “Any track that I really liked in IndyCar, I don’t seem to like in the stock car, so I’m trying to treat this like I’m coming out here for the first time. We’ll see if that helps.”
Yeley, Ragan, Ambrose and Kvapil tested in GT America stock cars supplied by Pioneer Motorsports, while Gilliland drove a Camping World Series West car.
“People used to think, ‘This is Sonoma, a road race. I’m not good at road races,’” Gilliland said. “But now, with the points so close, you can’t give up on one race. You can’t have a bad race anymore and expect to be up front. It’s too competitive now, so people are starting to take it more seriously.”
