NASCAR Sprint Cup rookie Sam Hornish Jr. is carrying some extra momentum into Sunday's Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway.
Not only does the Penske Racing driver have his team back in the all-important top 35 in the Sprint Cup owner points, which guarantees him a starting spot in the race, but he's coming off consecutive finishes of 18th last Sunday at Dover International Speedway and 13th a week earlier at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
“I am really proud of the hard work and efforts of this Mobil 1 team over the past few weeks," said Hornish. "The results are showing on track, and I’m real happy that we’re finally starting to get the finishes that we should be getting.”
Hornish's 18th-place at Dover came after rebounding from a violation on pit road that cost the former open- wheel driver important track position. He was running in the top 10 at the time of the penalty.
The final result was enough to vault Hornish up three spots to 33rd in owner points. Hornish, who now holds a 29-point advantage over 35th-place Michael Waltrip, hopes to pad that cushion at Pocono, another track where he'll be making his first Cup start.
Based on his performance at last week's Pocono test with NASCAR's new generation car, Hornish believes another strong outing could be in the cards.
“I tested at Pocono in an ARCA car, and we participated in the two-day NASCAR test as well," he said. "The seat time at the track has been invaluable because I have never raced there. I feel that the tests were productive and that Sunday will be another good day for our team."
