Hendrick Motorsports' Doug Duchardt blames Fontana engine failures on faulty parts

A Hendrick Motorsports official says the team has discovered the source of engine failures in the cars of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin during last Sunday’s Auto Club 500 at Auto Club Speedway and is confident the problem won’t happen again.
The engines in the No. 88 Chevrolet of Earnhardt Jr. and the No. 5 of Martin failed within a few laps of each other in the race.
Doug Duchardt, vice president of development for Hendrick, said the problems were traced to a set of parts from an outside supplier.
"Both cars had valve train failures that were related to a specific batch of parts from a vendor,” Duchardt said in a news release. “All of our engines, lease programs included, had parts from the same batch, so we're glad it wasn't more widespread.”
Duchardt said the team has taken steps to make sure the problem won’t occur again.
“It's always extremely disappointing when something like that happens, but, fortunately, it's a problem we can quickly address and fix,” Duchardt said. “Our engine team did a great job identifying the root cause, and it shouldn't affect us moving forward."

Feb 25, 2009 at 3:23 PMI love it when politics enter NASCAR blogs. The govt. isn't actually bailing the car companies out, they are bailing out all the current and retired UAW workers whose benefits put such a drain on the companies that they can't overcome it. The govt is trying to keep those people from losing their livlihood and pensions and healthcare benefits. But, through years of bullying the car companies, the unions did it to themselves. How does throwing money at an insolvent business model fix anything? Its a waste of billions without restructuring the union agreements to bring costs down to a competitive level with foreign manufacturers.

Feb 26, 2009 at 1:31 AMI obviously don't know "squat" about how parts and engines are divided out among team members. But, I would HOPE that ALL 4 team members are being given the same basic parts, so nothing like the Fontana situation would EVER happen again. Dale Jr. dealt with plenty of engine failures during his last year at DEI. To have it happening now at Hendrick, is disappointing. I'm also SO ready for Mark Martin to be able to "LET LOOSE" and show what a great driver & competitor he is. He has it in him to run in the top 5 on a weekly basis, IF given the right opportunity. He's more that proven that several times in his career. I admit to being a very excited Matt Kenseth fan, esp. with Matt's early success in 2009. But, I can ALSO appreciate other drivers in the series. Mark's driven a Ford & now a Chevy. He's earned a lot of respect, same as Jeff Burton has, from when they drove Roush Fords until the Chevys they drive today. It's the "man that makes the driver", in my book.

Feb 26, 2009 at 11:22 AMHey Dale #20, those benefits prevented the car companies from being able to invest in technologies and keep up with competition. They can barely pay out the benefits let alone build new plants in the US or retool in the US. Thats why GM is now selling Australian Holden division vehicles here as Pontiacs and European Opel division here as Saturn. The American auto industry killed itself through giving in to a union mob for decades here in the states. And no I am not saying they should lose ALL of those benefits, but there are only two options: First, the companies go under and they recieve those promised benefits from the government who has to back it up, in which the retirees will recieve less, or second, the companies survive and they recieve less benefits than they were promised. In 2008, GM posted $31 billion in losses and is behind in pension funding by $12.4 billion. It's cost structure is unsustainable. The solution is difficult either way it happens.

Feb 26, 2009 at 12:18 PMThe answer it very clear #31. The 24 and 48 are working just for themselves, they aren't team players with anyone else, anyone watching and keeping up with the racing, can figure that out very easily. You don't think for one minute little Jeffy is going to help someone else but himself in this racing world, oh yes, he sounds like it, he likes to hear himself talk on and on and on,but he is all for himself and that is it. He keeps very close to Jimmie, due to the fact Jimmie is racing his car and he has to know just what is with that #48 and keep up with him. My opinion (and no one wants to know it) is that Hendrick should only have the 24 and 48 as they seem to be his best interest. They have the best crew, the best engineers, the best knowledge and all. And if you really look into it, I bet they have the first pick of the parts and engines. Sorry, but martin and Dale will just be there for the advertising for Hendrick. I'm sure Brian, Kasey, and Kyle have had alot of good reasons they are out of there. But they are adult enough to keep their true feelings to themselves. Someone, please call me wrong on this and then I will start watching the races again, but until then, I'm going back to golf on Sundays.

Feb 26, 2009 at 3:17 PMRobert, you probably aren't going to find ANY of the parts in these cars on your dealer's shelves. They are ALL special, some from the manufacturers, but most from the after market. I remember though the last year Jr was at DEI, they were giving him some "experimental" parts and was why he lost so many engines. Same could be happening at Hendrick too. I don't know this for sure, but very possible. We will just have to wait and see how the trend goes, won't we?!?!?! SHOULD be a very interesting year with all the scenerios. Certainly worth watching in my book. --- Marilyn YOU may or may not be wrong, but whether you are or not, the world doesn't revolve around number 24 and 48. I like golf but would NEVER play in instead of watching a NASCAR race. Mark is the only Hendrick driver that is one of my favorites, IF something happens to him, I will still keep watching the rest of my favorites and even the not so favorites.

Feb 27, 2009 at 3:56 PMMarilyn- I agree with you 100%. Jr and Mark are only at Hendrick to sell merchandise and generate revenue. If Hendrick was really interested in winning races with the 5 or 88 teams, there would have been information passed between teams. It is really clear that this has not been happening. One clear example of this is Infinion in '07. The 24 and 48 both showed up to race with their little body "experiment in the gray area between the templates." The 5 (now 88) and 25 (now 5) were not given those changes. In that case, however; it worked out better for the 5 & 25.

Feb 27, 2009 at 8:43 PMAll the motors are built in 1 building. It does not matter that the 5 and 88 are in another building 100 fett from the others. COMP Performance supplies the springs that had a bad coating on them, same problem as they had in Daytona a year ago.
