CONCORD, N.C. – Greg Biffle held onto third place in the Sprint Cup standings with a seventh-place finish in Saturday night’s Bank of America 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, but a loose handling condition during the final green-flag run made the Roush Fenway Racing driver hungry for more.
Biffle was fifth when the race restarted for the last time with 33 laps to go following final pit stops and led for the final time on the 277th circuit of the 334-lap race.
Biffle was surprised that a call for four tires - when others took two tires or no tires during final stops - didn’t turn out to his advantage.
“We put four tires on. It was my call,” Biffle said. “I felt four tires would be the right call. We had been really fast all night, but I was just too loose. I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t turn the steering wheel and give it gas and, man, it just murdered me.”
Biffle was particularly surprised that four tires didn’t work after being strong earlier in the race. The driver led twice for 16 laps and spent most of the event running among the top five.
“Normally it’s gonna handle, but what happened was it turned so good that I couldn’t get the power down and the back end wouldn’t stay under it,” he said. “We freed it up half-a-round and you wouldn’t think that was too much, but, obviously, it was.”
Biffle entered the night 77 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson and is now 86 back of the Hendrick Motorsports driver after Johnson finished just one spot ahead in sixth.
“I feel really good,” Biffle said. “I would have felt better if we would have won tonight and been about 30 points back or 40, but we’re not gonna give up.”
