DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR has determined that Roush Fenway Racing’s Greg Biffle and Penske Racing’s Sam Hornish Jr. will have to start the Sprint Cup Series Coke Zero 400 from the rear of the field Saturday.
Biffle and Hornish wrecked late in practice Thursday and never got their backup cars out on the track. Because qualifying got rained out Friday and they will start the race without having turned a lap in the car, Sprint Cup Series Director John Darby determined they should start in the rear of the field.
“They don’t want us to start up there if the transmission sticks in gear, or the brakes don’t work, or we’re leaking oil, or the steering locks up,” Biffle said.
Biffle didn’t seem too upset.
“There’s a part of me that doesn’t mind starting in the back, so I can figure it out on my own and then start working through traffic because, inevitably, sometime during the night, you’ve lost some track position, you got out of line and get shuffled out and end up 30th, you get back in there and race your way back to 10th,” Biffle said. “So, you’re back and forth anyway. So, really, it’s a non-issue.”

Jul 4, 2009 at 4:35 PMBecause this is a impound race, there was no practice after qualifying was rained out so Greg and Sam have had no on track time with these cars. Tony had some final practice laps with his backup car so they didn't make him start in the back. At Daytona it's no biggie so why not make them start in the back to make sure the cars are race?

Jul 4, 2009 at 6:18 PMNascar has their head someplace else except on business. They are continually messing with the drivers heads. They could have let them turn a couple of laps to check the cars out. If they were driving a Toyota it would'nt have been a problem.
