Greg Biffle, Sam Hornish Jr. to start in the back for Daytona Cup race
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR has determined that Roush Fenway Racing’s Greg Biffle and Penske Racing’s Sam Hornish Jr. will have to start the Sprint Cup Series Coke Zero 400 from the rear of the field Saturday.
Biffle and Hornish wrecked late in practice Thursday and never got their backup cars out on the track. Because qualifying got rained out Friday and they will start the race without having turned a lap in the car, Sprint Cup Series Director John Darby determined they should start in the rear of the field.
“They don’t want us to start up there if the transmission sticks in gear, or the brakes don’t work, or we’re leaking oil, or the steering locks up,” Biffle said.
Biffle didn’t seem too upset.
“There’s a part of me that doesn’t mind starting in the back, so I can figure it out on my own and then start working through traffic because, inevitably, sometime during the night, you’ve lost some track position, you got out of line and get shuffled out and end up 30th, you get back in there and race your way back to 10th,” Biffle said. “So, you’re back and forth anyway. So, really, it’s a non-issue.”
