Officials with Jim Beam, sponsor for Robby Gordon Motorsports, say they are pleased with the National Stock Car Racing Commission’s decision to rescind the points penalty and crew chief suspension NASCAR assessed the team earlier this season.
Robby Gordon was fined 100 championship driver and owner points and crew chief Frank Kerr was fined $100,000 and suspended for six races after NASCAR inspectors found an unapproved front bumper on Gordon’s car at Daytona. The part was supplied by the manufacturer, and Gordon appealed the penalty based on that fact and his lack on intent to skirt the rules.
On Wednesday, the Commission rescinded the points penalty and the suspension, though it raised the monetary fine to $150,000.
Jim Beam officials had written a letter to NASCAR on behalf of Gordon and also started an online petition that was signed by 13,000. The petition was also delivered to NASCAR.
“As primary sponsor of the most successful driver-owned team in NASCAR for the past four years, Jim Beam is pleased with NASCAR’s decision to eliminate the penalties assessed after the Daytona 500,” the company said in a statement. “We felt all along that when presented with the facts, NASCAR would agree that an honest mistake that was corrected prior to practice and qualifying did not deserve such a harsh penalty.
“Jim Beam extends a special thank you to the thousands of fans who joined our call to action and voiced their support for Robby and the race team. Your voices were heard!”

Mar 8, 2008 at 1:51 AMIt was fantastic for "Jim Beam" to stand by Robby Gordon! How many sponsors have stood by their driver when something that happened wasn't his fault? Robby must be thrilled by the backing of his sponsor and so many NASCAR fans. A great way to start his season. What I don't understand is why NASCAR rescinded the points penalty and suspension but raised the fine. That just doesn't make sense.
